Oilers-Canucks Preview
Edmonton Oilers vs. Vancouver Canucks

Edmonton's Ryan Nugent-Hopkins won't play Tuesday in Vancouver, but another one of the NHL's top rookies will be on the ice for the Canucks.

Cody Hodgson looks to stay hot and help the Canucks hand the Oilers a sixth consecutive road loss in a matchup of teams at opposite ends of the Western Conference standings.

After playing 20 games during the regular season and playoffs for Vancouver in 2010-11, Hodgson has appeared in all 48 contests this season and ranks among the team's top scorers with 13 goals and 16 assists.

Hodgson, who turns 22 next month, has seven goals and seven assists in his last 16 games. Two of those goals came Saturday during a 4-3 home win over San Jose.

"Everybody wants to contribute and do well," Hodgson said. "It doesn't matter who gets the goals on the team, we just want to play well and come out with a win."

With 29 points, Hodgson ranks fourth in the NHL among rookies - six back of leader Nugent-Hopkins. However, the young stars will not get the chance to square off for the fourth time this season. Nugent-Hopkins remains sidelined due to the left shoulder injury that has kept him out since Jan. 2.

Hodgson has one goal with two assists against Edmonton in 2011-12, helping Vancouver (29-15-4) take two of the first three meetings in the season series.

"When he's on the ice, you're hearing more and more compliments on the bench of guys talking about him," teammate Kevin Bieksa said of Hodgson. "It's nice to see him playing like this, and he's helping the team win."

Hodgson and the Canucks won the last meeting with the Oilers, 5-3 at Vancouver on Dec. 26. It was the Canucks' 12 victory in their last 16 home games against Edmonton.

Though Nugent-Hopkins will not play, Edmonton (18-26-4) still has a pair of other talented youngsters in second-year forwards Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall.

A 2008 first-round pick, Eberle has two goals and four assists against the Canucks this season. He matched a career high with 18 goals as the Oilers snapped a three-game skid with a 2-1 shootout victory over San Jose on Monday, just their sixth win in 26 games overall.

"They have been reading about how crappy they are. I don't think they are that bad," Edmonton coach Tom Renney said. "They have been working hard all year. It just doesn't always turn into what any of us wanted."

Eberle, who will play in this weekend's All-Star game, has five goals in his last five home contests but only one in his last seven road games.

Hall, the No. 1 overall pick from the 2010 draft, scored in Monday's shootout and also has a goal in each of his last four road games. However, he's been held to one assist in three career games at Vancouver.

Edmonton has been outscored 48-26 while losing 12 of 13 away from home.

After making 44 saves against the Sharks on Monday, Devan Dubnyk is drawing consideration from Renney to start this contest. Dubnyk stopped 40 shots in his only previous start at Vancouver, a 4-1 victory April 2.
