VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -A rejuvenated power play put the Canucks in position to win early and bailed them out late.

Daniel Sedin scored Vancouver's fourth power-play goal with 1:58 left in overtime and the Canucks recovered after blowing a three-goal lead in the third period to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 on Friday night.

With Carolina forward Scott Walker off for shooting the puck over the boards for the second time in the game, Sedin took a cross-ice feed from twin Henrik on the back door and redirected it behind a helpless Cam Ward.

"When you're up 3-0 you should hold onto the lead, but that happens and we can't think too much about it," said Daniel, who scored just his second goal in the last 13 games. "We got two points and that was the most important thing."

Yannick Tremblay gave Vancouver a 3-0 lead 5:17 into the third period, but Craig Adams put Carolina on the board 39 seconds later and Eric Cole made it 3-2 with 4:18 left. Mike Commodore tied it with 2:46 left when his long shot off the left boards then somehow sneaked past Roberto Luongo and just over the goal line.

"They're not the Stanley Cup champions for nothing," Luongo said. "They worked hard in the third and got a lot of scoring chances. The second one was off the post, off me and in. The third one was off my face, off my shoulder and in."

Vancouver's goals were all off Carolina penalties at the other end.

"We just went back to basics," said Marc Chouinard, who got his first goal - and just his second point - of the season. "It certainly wasn't fancy, but it worked out, so it's good."

Jan Bulis also ended a long drought and the Canucks scored more than two goals for just the third time in their last 17 games. Brendan Morrison had three assists, including a great diving play to keep the puck onside for Chouinard's goal, and Tremblay added two assists in his first NHL game in 2 1/2 years.

Ward made 26 saves for the Hurricanes, who have lost the first three of their four-game Western road trip that concludes in Colorado on Monday.

"The result is disappointing, the effort was not," Carolina coach Peter Laviolette said. "You fight back, you don't get it, but it sets the tone. Hopefully this can set the tone and we can get a win in the last game here and go back home and play some games and go from there."

After losing forwards Taylor Pyatt and Rick Rypien and point man Sami Salo to injuries Monday, the Canucks shook up their lines and power play. It paid off as the new-look power play went 4-for-10 against Carolina's ninth-ranked penalty kill after only scoring twice in 25 chances over the previous six games.

Bulis opened the scoring on a rare power-play shift, tapping a Markus Naslund rebound under Ward midway through the first period to end a 13-game pointless skid. Chouinard, also enjoying rare time on the man advantage, added his first as a Canuck with 2:19 left in the second period, firing a rebound past Ward.

"It was my first time this year on the power play so I said, 'Fellas it's going to be pretty simple tonight,"' Chouinard said. "We needed to feel each other out and if it didn't work the first time, just give each other time to adjust."

Tremblay didn't need much time to adjust back to the NHL. Playing his first game after being called up from the AHL to replace Salo, he beat Ward with a point shot that deflected off a Carolina defender. It was the first NHL goal since Nov. 11, 2003, for Tremblay, who spent the last two seasons in Europe after playing 378 NHL games over eight years.

"I was happy things went well," he said. "I felt comfortable on the ice and I tried to keep the game simple and that helped out quite a bit."

Carolina outshot a rested Canucks team 13-7 in the first period and 39-31 overall despite playing their third game in four nights and missing captain and leading scorer Rod Brind'Amour, who suffered a groin injury Wednesday in Edmonton.

Luongo was sharp early, however, and stopped Eric Staal on both a breakaway and the ensuing penalty shot with 1:10 left in the second. He got a stick on the first attempt, but Kevin Bieksa tripped Staal while he was shooting, so Luongo had to get his glove on a second one-on-one shot.

"I thought we fought hard all game again, but the bottom line was we didn't win and that's what we're looking to do," Staal said.

Notes: The Canucks also lost C Tommi Santala for three weeks to a sprained knee late in the first period. They have recalled Lee Goren from Manitoba of the AHL for their game Saturday night in Calgary. ... Carolina has six players with 10 or more goals. Naslund is the only Canuck in double digits with 12.
