  • ROdin's big change

When Anton Rodin plays, he plays well. The only problem is, he doesn’t play very much. Rodin scored a goal on his first shift, and added an assist and a penalty as Sweden’s national junior defeated the Carleton Ravens 5-1. More
  • Sauve steps up

Yann Sauve was recently named QMJHL TELUS Defensive Player of the Week, a stretch in which the 6-foot-3, 209-pound defenceman registered one goal, four assists and a plus-8 rating in three Saint John victories. More
  • So many prospects, so little time

Ask Dave Gagner how many kids he has and he’ll hesitate for a moment before answering. Vancouver’s director of player development has three children of his own, but his job entails watching over many more adolsecents than that. More

eric walsky

Team: Manitoba Moose (AHL)
Season stats: 16 GP, 1 G, 5 A

Manitoba Moose fans know Eric Walsky is fast but it wasn’t until the team held their first ever skills competition earlier this week that it became official. Walsky, currently playing in his first full season with the Moose, finished his lap around the MTS Centre in a time of 13.46 seconds, .22 seconds faster than teammate Marco Rosa. Already everyone’s new favourite Moose, Walsky then hit all five targets in the accuracy shooting challenge to claim top spot. The Anchorage, Alaska product’s production on this night was impressive, but it really didn’t surprise anyone who has followed him all season as he is tied for fifth in Moose scoring with one goal and six assists, alongside his team-high plus-3 rating. Walsky has three points, all assists, in his last two outings and he scored the shootout winner in a 2-1 Moose win over the Toronto Marlies last Saturday.

Taylor Ellington

Team: Victoria Salmon Kings (ECHL)
Season stats: 11 GP, 1 G, 4 A

Sitting in the basement of the ECHL’s National Conference, the Victoria Salmon Kings have had few things go right this season. The play of Canucks prospect Taylor Ellington is thankfully one of the positives. The 21-year-old defenceman, a Victoria product proudly suiting up for the Salmon Kings after five years with the WHL’s Everett Silvertips, is tied for first in scoring for defence with one goal and four assists through 11 games. The Kings are 4-10-0 thus far, but Ellington is holding his own with a plus-2 rating; he was a plus-1 with a pair of helpers in Victoria’s last win, a 5-3 victory against Idaho on November 18th.

kevin connauton

Team: Vancouver Giants (WHL)
Season stats: 25 GP, 9 G, 13 A

AJHL, NCAA and now the WHL, Kevin Connauton is a traveling man, but he’ll likely lose that title now that he’s gotten comfortable with the Vancouver Giants. Connauton, an Edmonton native, has 22 points (9-13-22) in 25 games to sit third in team scoring and fourth in rookie scoring for defenceman, only one point back of a share of second in the league. These numbers, and the fact that Connauton isn’t a true rookie as he’s coming out of Division One, are leading to some good treatment on the bus by the Giants, he recently revealed to the Vancouver Sun. “At the beginning of the year, I talked to Lance Bouma [team captain] to see where I stood. I understood I was a first-year guy but, at the same time, I was coming from Division One. So I'm back there but I'm not too far back. I'm definitely not the very back seat. I've kind of found the middle ground.”
