Sergei Shirokov didn’t have much success in his first foray into NHL action, but that hasn’t stopped him from putting on quite a show with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose. The 23-year-old Russian sniper has been a huge part of Manitoba’s offence this season as he currently sits first in team scoring with 14 goals and 17 assists in 42 games. Those numbers earned him a roster spot for PlanetUSA at the 2010 AHL All-Star Game in Portland earlier this week. Although PlanetUSA fell to the Canadian AHL All-Stars in a come-from-behind shootout, Shirokov held his own scoring two goals in the 10-9 loss.

steven anthony

Team: Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL)
Sauve season stats: 46 GP, 16 G, 23 A

After closing out 2009 as his most productive year yet, Steven Anthony had struggled to find his scoring touch to open 2010. In his first four games of the new year, Anthony had only one assist until he found the back of the net for the first time in five contests on January 17. Anthony scored and had an assist in 6-0 Saint John win over Chicoutimi; the two points gives the Sea Dogs forward 16 goals and 23 assists through 46 games. Anthony is now three goals off his career-high of 19 and nine points away from matching his career-high for points, which he set last season.

michael funk

Team: Manitoba Moose (AHL)
Season stats: 19 GP, 1 G, 6 A

Injuries have been a major hurdle for the Manitoba Moose this season and the news got worse recently when it was revealed that defenceman Michael Funk will miss the remainder of the season because of a concussion he suffered in November. It was the fourth concussion in 14 months for the 22-year-old, who had one goal and six assists through 19 games in his first season with the Moose. "He's a non-veteran, very experienced, and a real capable -- as you saw this year -- defenceman that we were really hoping would be part of our big four," Manitoba coach Scott Arniel told the Winnipeg Free Press. "He's a big piece that's going to be missing from us. But saying that, we're more concerned about his well-being other than just hockey."
