2014 NHL Draft Live Blog
What's up everybody! Derek Jory here, coming at you live from the Wells Fargo Centre in Philadelphia, specifically section 110, row 1, seat 3. Primo.
I'll be bringing you all the action from the 2014 NHL Draft; rumours will be in italics, confirmed confirmations in bold and general shenanigans everywhere else. I won't report every pick, instead focusing on what you aren't seeing or hearing from other outlets. We're having cheesesteaks for media dinner, for example. And yes, that is a gut I'm rocking after eating a cheesesteak a day since we got here - four in total. My new goal is to eat one for every player the Canucks draft this weekend.
If you've got any questions, comments, complaints or you just want to say hi, leave a comment below, tweet @VanCanucks or write it down and have Hedwig fly it over to me.
Let's do this.
9:00 a.m. (EST) -- Welcome back to Philadelphia for Day 2 of the NHL Draft. The Canucks have six picks today (36, 50, 66, 126, 156 & 186); Vancouver has two second round picks and doesn't have one in the fourth. As usual I'll have updates here, you can also watch the action in the above stream and be sure to follow @VanCanucks for behind the scenes coverage.
10:00 a.m. (EST) -- Roll call is complete. The fans are a lot quieter today, not many people here actually. Feels like a Panters home game.
10:17 a.m. (EST) -- Canucks use their first pick of the second round to select THATCHER DEMKO out of Boston College. He's from San Diego, CA, and his favourite goalie growing up was Dan Cloutier.
10:27 a.m. (EST) -- Vancouver has traded the 50th overall selection to Los Angeles for forward LINDEN VEY.
12:03 p.m. (EST) -- Oh hey there. That 90 minutes flew by like nothing. To update Vancouver's drafting, the Canucks took NIKITA TRYAMKIN in the third round, 66th overall. We followed Tryamkin and Demko as they did their thing through the media, then took part in a few photoshoots. The highlight was definitely when Jeff Vinnick was shooting Demko with player equipment on because he didn't know he was a goalie. Awesome.
12:08 p.m. (EST) -- GUSTAV FORSLING, welcome to the Canucks. Vancouver just drafted him 126th overall.
12:30 p.m. (EST) -- At 156th overall, the Canucks just picked KYLE PETTIT. He's not in the building, so no behind the scenes coverage. On the plus side, I don't have to run around like a chicken with its head cut off. Bonus! One selection remains for the Canucks. If you predict who Vancouver takes, you win a GIANT prize.
1:13 p.m. (EST) -- If you picked MACKENZE STEWART as Vancouver's final draft pick, you win! And yes that's how he spells his name.
1:13 p.m. (EST) -- And with that, the 2014 NHL Draft comes to an end for the Canucks - I think. They could still acquire a late pick and if so, I'll be back to update all three of you reading this. If not, thanks for reading, it's been a slice, there's cake in the team suite sooooo Jory out!
6:00 p.m. (EST) -- What a day. Already. I was hoping to get a pre-draft nap in this afternoon but nooooooooo, Linden, Benning and company decided to make three trades. Our new thing is big trades on draft day, if anyone else does it they're "Canucking." Now that it's branded, it's a thing.
6:14 p.m. (EST) -- Below is a photo of the Canucks draft table (front row baby) and Josh Robins smiling happily in front of it. He's our runner this year, he'll do errands as needed - photocopy this, grab me a Sharpie, do a little dance, you know, the usual stuff. He's also taking behind the scenes photos for us and I'll post a gallery of all the action later this weekend. Go get'em Josh.
6:36 p.m. (EST) -- Just had a chat with Leon Draisaitl, who is seated way higher than a lot of the other prospects. He said the prospects each have a ticket with a seat number on it, so he's sitting in his seat. Wait - the prospects need tickets to get in? Maybe the sixth round dudes, but Draisaitl could go top five. Where's the love?
6:54 p.m. (EST) -- They're doing roll call and everytime a team is called, every fan in the house yells "SUCKS." Flyers fans are impressing me early on.
6:57 p.m. (EST) -- Biggest booes went to the Rangers and Penguins, not surprisingly. Canucks were politely booed, the "sucks" was about a six on 10.
7:14 p.m. (EST) -- Gary Bettman was just epically booed. "Isn't this supposed to be the City of Brotherly Love? I love the passion," Bettman said. The booes continued for at least three minutes. Amazing.
7:20 p.m. (EST) -- The 1st overall pick in the 2014 #NHLDraft is Aaron Ekblad, who joins the Florida Panthers.
7:20 p.m. (EST) -- Tweet from @Benkuzma: Told #Canucks were "all in" to get No. 1 pick. Didn't happen with No. 6, 24 picks, Shinkaruk offer. Panthers pick Ekblad. #NHLDraft2014
7:28 p.m. (EST) -- The Buffalo Sabres select Sam Reinhart 2nd overall. The Sabres were not messing around there, straight up to the microphone and announced the pick. Florida's Dale Tallon opened with a stand-up routine.
7:32 p.m. (EST) -- Leon Draisaitl is off to Edmonton having just been drafted 3rd overall by the Oilers.
7:38 p.m. (EST) -- And with the 4th overall pick, Sam Bennett joins the Calgary Flames. One more pick until it's our pick, who are the Canucks going to pick? Why am I nervous? Are you?
7:43 p.m. (EST) -- Ekblad was just interviewed on the jumbotron. Asked what he thinks of Florida, he replied: "I hear sometimes it's hard to focus on hockey down there, but I'm sure I'll be fine." LOL.
7:44 p.m. (EST) -- The New York Islanders draft Michael Dal Colle 5th overall. It's go time. Jim Benning, a sixth overall pick from 1981, is on the clock with the sixth overall selection. Who's it going to be? Eek.
7:51 p.m. (EST) -- The #Canucks proudly select JAKE VIRTANEN sixth overall. Welcome to Vancouver! Virtanen, 17, 6'1", 208 lbs, right winger from New Westminster, BC. Played for the Calgary Hitmen last season.
7:51 p.m. (EST) -- Virtanen rocking a white dress shirt, skinny black tie, black suit. He's all smiles, as are his parents. Did you know he has dual Canadian and Finnish citizenship? You do now.
7:53 p.m. (EST) -- All Virtanen, all the time coming up. Be back in a flash.
8:30 p.m. (EST) -- And we're back. Jake Virtanen, what a kid. Just followed our newest prospect from the draft stage to a TSN interview, NHL interview, Team1040 interview, CanucksTV interview, Sirius interview and media scrum before he signed autographs for fans and some hats for the NHL. He also had time to take this crazy good selfie (right), which he was crazy proud of.
8:41 p.m. (EST) -- Here's Virtanen's first media scrum as an NHLer. He handled it like a pro.
8:53 p.m. (EST) -- Two questions below from Canucks fans: Rick Reeves asks "when will Virtanen be ready to play after his shoulder surgery?" and Saar Regev said "Derek, are the Cheesesteaks in Philly as advertised or overhyped?" Virtanen told the media he's hoping to be ready for contact by October and that everything is going according to plan regarding his recovery. And the cheesesteaks are amazing, best was from Jim's Steaks on South Street. Mouthwatering to say the least.
8:56 p.m. (EST) -- Ron Hextall just made their first pick of the draft, 17th overall, and Philly fans seem to like it. He's from Manitoba, so what's not to like! I've never covered a game in this building, I'm excited to this upcoming season. These fans are rowdy.
9:08 p.m. (EST) -- Canucks are nearly on the clock again, this time picking a bit of a lesser known player at 24th overall. What say you, who will they draft?
9:12 p.m. (EST) -- More goodness on Virtanen, namely his favourites - NHL team: Vancouver Canucks NHL player: Jonathan Toews, Rick Nash Shootout move: “Backhand, forehand, shoot over pad” Goal celebration: “One leg, fist pump” Video game: Call of Duty Movie: Now You See Me TV show: Duck Dynasty Actor: Kevin Hart Music group: Florida Georgia Line Most played song: ‘Wake Me Up’ by Avicii Sport (other than hockey): Rugby, Lacrosse Athlete (non-hockey): Peyton Manning Twitter follow: @BizNasty2point0
9:12 p.m. (EST) -- Jake Virtanen: The Infographic
9:35 p.m. (EST) -- The Canucks just used their 24th overall pick to nab JARED McCANN.
9:40 p.m. (EST) -- McCann, 18, 6'1", 176 lbs, hard-working, two-way forward from Stratford, Ontario. Played for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds last season and, get this, McCann and Virtanen have played together twice, most recently on Canada's U18 team last April. AND THEY WERE ROOMMATES. Trippy.
9:40 p.m. (EST) -- I'm off to find McCann, stay tuned.
10:40 p.m. (EST) -- Just followed McCann through the media process before meeting the Virtanen family. A lot of hugs, tons of tears and the smiles were huge. Fantastic interview with them.
10:40 p.m. (EST) -- Team bus leaves in 10 minutes, so that's it for me. What a day. Sleep please. Until tomorrow, Canucks fans.
