With 12 games remaining on the schedule, the Utica Comets (29-28-3-4) sit just five points out of a playoff position after picking up four of a possible six points this past weekend. The Comets are 18-8-1-1 in their last 28 games and 29-20-2-3 since starting the season 0-8-1-1.
Friday, March 21: Adirondack Phantoms 4 – Utica Comets 3
-Both teams scored three times in the third period but it was the Phantoms late second period power play goal that was the difference as the Comets came up short, dropping a 4-3 decision on Friday night.
-Kent Huskins (3) led the way for the Comets with a goal and an assist, his first multi-point game in the AHL since February 23, 2007.
-Brandon DeFazio (13) and Colin Stuart (16) also tallied for the Comets.
-Joacim Eriksson turned aside 21 shots between the pipes, including 20 in the first 40 minutes before allowing three goals on four shots in the third period.
-Utica outshot Adirondack 39-25 in the game, including 21-4 in the third period alone.
-Alex Biega, Frank Corrado, David Marshall, Pascal Pelletier and Henrik Tommernes all picked up helpers.
-Corrado led all Comets skaters with a career-high five shots on goal.
-Corrado, Huskins and Marshall all finished a game-high plus-2.
Saturday, March 22: Utica Comets 2 – Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 1
-Colin Stuart (17) scored the game-winner just short of the midway mark of the third period to propel the Comets to a 2-1 victory over the Penguins on Saturday.
-Pascal Pelletier (13) also tallied for the Comets, while Brandon DeFazio, Alex Friesen, Alexandre Grenier and Cal O’Reilly all picked up helpers in the game.
-Joe Cannata turned aside 22-of-23 shots to grab the victory in the Comets goal in his first start since back on February 23.
-Stuart led all skaters with five shots on goal as the Comets outshot the Penguins 29-23 on the night.
-Osoyoos, BC native Chuck Kobasew scored the lone-goal for the Penguins, assisted by former Canucks forward Andrew Ebbett.
Sunday, March 23: Utica Comets 4 – Milwaukee Admirals 3 (SO)
-The Comets mounted a third period comeback and then went 3-for-4 in the shootout to steal a massive two points away from the Milwaukee Admirals on Sunday afternoon.
-Brandon DeFazio (14), Alexandre Grenier (17) and Pascal Pelletier (14) all found the back of the net for the Comets.
-Pelletier also added an assist in the game, while Frank Corrado picked up two helpers and Darren Archibald, David Marshall and Cal O’Reilly all finished the night with one assist.
-Joacim Eriksson recorded win number 21 on the season, making 20 saves on the night, not including three more saves in the shootout, where DeFazio, Marshall and Pelletier all tallied for the Comets.
-DeFazio also had a game-high five shots on goal, while Pelletier and Henrik Tommernes both finished a team-high plus-1.
-There was a pair of scraps in the game as DeFazio took on Admirals defenseman Anthony Bitetto midway through the first period, while Darren Archibald took on Scott Ford in the middle stanza.
Comet of the Week
After posting two goals and two assists along with a shootout goal in three games this past weekend, Pascal Pelletier takes home Comet of the Week honours. The Labrador City, NL, born forward had one assist and four shots on goal in Friday’s loss to the Phantoms, a goal and three shots on net in Saturday’s win over the Penguins before ending the week with a goal and an assist, along with a shootout marker in Sunday’s thrilling win over Milwaukee. The 30-year-old veteran of 16 NHL games has a stranglehold on the Comets scoring lead with 52 points (14-38-52) in 57 games this season.
For the second consecutive weekend, the Comets will play three games in three days as they host the Abbotsford Heat (35-24-5-2) on Friday and Saturday night before closing out the week with a Sunday afternoon tilt against the Iowa Wild (25-28-6-4).
