The Utica Comets (16-21-2-4) finished off the month of January with a 6-4-1-2 record, marking the first month in franchise history the team was over .500. Thanks to continued stellar goaltending from Joacim Eriksson, the Comets picked up three of a possible six points this past week.Game Results
Tuesday, January 28: Lake Erie Monsters 3 – Utica Comets 2 (SO)
-Benn Ferriero and Patrick Mullen both found the back of the net but the Comets came up short against the Monsters on Tuesday, losing 3-2 in a shootout.
-Joacim Eriksson continued his strong play with a 33-save performance as well as being named the game’s second star.
-Ferriero, who also had an assist in the game, extended his point streak to nine games
-The Comets went 0-for-4 in the shootout as Ferriero, Nicklas Jensen, Cal O’Reilly and Pascal Pelletier all couldn’t beat Monsters goaltender Calvin Pickard.
-O’Reilly and Peter Andersson both picked up one assist apiece.
-Jensen and Henrik Tommernes both finished with a team-high five shots on goal.
-Andersson, Biega and Jeremy Welsh all finished a team-high plus-1.
Friday, January 31: Utica Comets 3 – Syracuse Crunch 1
-Darren Archibald, Brandon DeFazio and Pascal Pelletier all found the back of the net as the Comets used a three-goal second period to skate to a 3-1 win over the Syracuse Crunch on Friday night.
-Grenier led all skaters with two helpers, while Archibald, Pelletier and Cal O’Reilly all finished with one assist.
-DeFazio and Grenier both finished with a team-high four shots on goal.
-Archibald, Grenier and Peter Andersson all were plus-2 on the night.
-Joacim Eriksson turned in another solid game, kicking aside 31 shots while being named the game’s first star.
-Pelletier was named second star of the game, while Archibald took home third star honors
Saturday, February 1: Rockford IceHogs 2 – Utica Comets 1
-Despite firing 35 shots on goal, the Comets fell 2-1 to the IceHogs on Saturday evening to end a three-game home stand with a 1-1-1 record.
-Pascall Pelletier scored the lone-goal for the Comets, just 28 second into the game on a Utica power-play, giving him 500 career professional points.
-Patrick Mullen and Cal O’Reilly picked up assists on the Pelletier goal.
-Joacim Eriksson continued his stellar play between the barber poles for the Comets, making 28 saves in the game. Eriksson has allowed two-goals or less in five of his last six starts.
-Alex Biega had a career high eight shots on goal for the Comets, while Darren Archibald and Nicklas Jensen both finished with five shots on goal.
Comet of the Week
Joacim Eriksson takes the nod for the second straight week as the product of Gavle, Sweden went 1-1-1 this past week with a 1.67 goals-against average and a .945 save-percentage. Eriksson was named Second Star of the game on Tuesday before being named First Star on Friday night. The AHL rookie finished the month of January with a 4-1-1 record with a 1.79 GAA, .939 SV% along with one shutout.Coming Up…
It’s a busy week ahead for the Comets as they embark on a five-game road trip and the start of nine road games in their next 10. Utica is in Chicago on Tuesday morning to take on the Wolves (25-16-2-2) before heading to Iowa to take on the Wild (19-16-5-3) on Wednesday. On Friday night the Comets take on the Milwaukee Admirals (21-13-6-4) before closing the week off with a Sunday afternoon clash against the Rockford IceHogs (21-21-4-2).
