After a big win on Wednesday over the Monsters, the Utica Comets (11-18-1-2) closed out the week with two straight three-goal defeats as they kicked-off a tough four-game road trip.

After a big win on Wednesday over the Monsters, the Utica Comets (11-18-1-2) closed out the week with two straight three-goal defeats as they kicked-off a tough four-game road trip.

Weekly Results

Wednesday, January 1st: Utica Comets 3 – Lake Erie Monsters 2


-Darren Archibald scored for the third straight game, while Joe Cannata stopped 18-of-20 shots to earn his third win of the season as the Comets edged the Monsters on Wednesday.

-Henrik Tommernes scored his fourth goal of the season in his first game back from injury with 1:04 remaining in the third period to send the game to overtime, but the Comets fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Bulldogs on Saturday.

-Pascal Pelletier had a goal and two helpers, while Colin Stuart added a single to round out the scoring for the Comets.

-Alex Biega had two assists, while Archibald and Brandon DeFazio both picked up one helper.

-Double Fight! Midway through the second period, Kellan Lain squared off with Daniel Maggio, while at the same time DeFazio took on Paul Carey.

-Archibald, DeFazio and Yann Sauve all had a team-high three shots on goal.

-Biega finished with a team-high plus-2 rating.

-Pelletier was awarded the Comets first penalty-shot in franchise history 8:23 into the first period. The Labrador City, Newfoundland product was stopped by the Monsters goaltender.

Friday, January 3rd: Rochester Americans 5 – Utica Comets 2


-Despite outshooting the Americans 35-26, the Comets dug themselves into a hole and couldn’t get out as they dropped their fifth game to Rochester this season.

- Kellan Lain and Pascal Pelletier provided the offence for the Comets, while Darren Archibald, Brandon DeFazio, Alexandre Grenier, Kent Huskins and Alex Mallet all had helpers.

-Henrik Tommernes scored his fourth goal of the season in his first game back from injury with 1:04 remaining in the third period to send the game to overtime, but the Comets fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Bulldogs on Saturday.

-Yann Sauve fed Brayden Irwin his lunch in a second period scrap, while just under four minutes later, Grenier and Tim Schaller had a spirited bout at centre ice.

-Pelletier had a game-high five shots on goal, while DeFazio, Lain and Mallet were the only Comets skaters to finish with a positive plus/minus, finishing plus-1 on the night.

-Joe Cannata allowed five goals on 26 shots between the barber poles for the Comets. This marks the first time in 28 career AHL appearances that the Wakefield, Massachusetts product has allowed more than four goals in game.

-This was the end of the Comets seven-game home stand, in which they went a successful 4-2-1.

Saturday, January 4th: Toronto Marlies 5 – Utica Comets 2

-For the second time this season, the Comets dropped a 5-3 decision to the Marlies as Utica opened up a four-game road trip.

-This marks the first time in four games the Comets have lost while playing north of the border.

-Alexandre Grenier scored his 10th of the season, while Kellan Lain netted his seventh goal of the year to pace the offence for the Comets.

-Darren Archibald, Alex Mallet, Pascal Pelletier and Yann Sauve all had helpers for the Comets.

-Grenier and Alex Biega finished with a team-high five shots on goal.

-Mallet and Patrick Mullen were the only Comets players to finish with a positive plus/minus, finishing the night with a plus-1.

-Joacim Eriksson allowed four goals on 29 shots in his return from the Canucks.

-For the second straight game, the Comets power play went 0-for-5.

-This marks the second time the Comets have given up five goals or more in back-to-back games in less than a month.

Comet of the Week

Darren Archibald takes home Comet of the Week honours after picking up four points (1-3-4) in three games this past week. The Newmarket, Ontario product had the game-winner and an assist for the Comets in their win over the Monsters on Wednesday and followed that up by picking up an assist in back-to-back games on the weekend. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder also finished with an even plus/minus rating, despite the Comets being outscored 12-7 in the three games. Archibald is currently riding a five-game point streak that has seen the power forward pick up six points (3-3-6), 11 shots and two fighting majors.

Coming Up…

The Comets continue their four-game road trip on Wednesday when they head to Oklahoma City to take on the Barons (13-17-1-5), followed up by a Saturday showdown in Austin against the Texas Stars (21-10-2-3).
