Canada off to the semis
Anthony Mantha’s second period penalty shot goal proved to be the game-winner as Canada booked a spot in the semifinals after defeating Switzerland 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the World Junior Championships on Thursday in Malmo, Sweden.
Canada, who has now gone to 16 straight semifinals at the World Juniors, will face-off against Finland on Saturday for a chance to play for gold on Sunday.
Griffin Reinhart opened the scoring with the lone-goal of the first period, while Curtis Lazar and Derrick Pouliot tallied third period insurance goals to round out the scoring attack for the Canadians.
Zachary Fucale made 19 saves to improve to 3-0-0 between the barber poles for Canada at the tournament.
If Sweden wins their semifinal matchup against Slovakia, Canada will play at 6am (PST) on Saturday. If Slovakia should prevail with the victory, Canada will play at 10am (PST) on Saturday.Bo Notes
-Horvat centred a line with Sam Reinhart and Scott Laughton.
-The London Knights star went 9-for-15 (60%) in the faceoff circle, including 3-for-4 (75%) on the penalty-kill, which puts him at 61% (42-69) in the tournament.
-With just over two minutes remaining in the first period, Horvat won an offensive zone faceoff and got the puck to Laughton, who drove the net and jammed the puck on goal before Griffin Reinhart came in from the point and banged the puck home to put Canada on the board.
-Horvat finished with two shots on goal, which gives him 10 shots through five games thus far.
-The Rodney, Ontario product finished with a plus-1 rating and now sits at plus-2 in the tournament.
-Horvat played on the second power-play unit with Sam Reinhart and Connor McDavid, along with Matt Dumba and Josh Morrissey on the point.
-Horvat’s best scoring chance came 38 seconds into the third period when he took a pass from Laughton in the slot only to see his one-timer blocked by Everett Silvertips defenseman Mirco Muller.
-Not only was the 6-foot, 205-pounder a beast in the faceoff circle on the penalty-kill, he also showed off another attribute while shorthanded, blocking a hard slap shot at the point with 7:51 remaining in the game.
