Tough times.

The Utica Comets (6-14-1-1) couldn’t find a way to carry over the momentum they gained in Abbotsford the week before as they dropped all three games this past week, getting outscored 14-5 along the way.

Wednesday, December 4: Rochester Americans 6 – Utica Comets 1

-Benn Ferriero scored the lone-goal for the Comets as they snapped their five-game road winning streak, falling 6-1 to the Americans.

-Joe Cannata was pulled after allowing three goals on 13 shots. Joacim Eriksson allowed three goals on 16 shots in relief.

-Darren Archibald had a game-high four shots on goal, while six Comets players finished with an even plus/minus in the game: Archibald, Ferrierio, Colin Stuart, Cal O’Reilly, Brett Lyon, Alex Mallet.

-O’Reilly and Yannick Weber picked up assists in the game. For Weber, it was his fifth straight game with a point since joining the Comets back on November 23.

-There were two scraps in the game: Lyon took on Johnny McGuire, while Yann Sauve dropped the mitts with Frederick Roy, the son of Avalanche coach Patrick Roy.

-The Comets outshot the Americans 11-4 in the first frame but ended up being outshot 29-26 by the time the final buzzer sounded.

Friday, December 6: Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5 – Utica Comets 3

-Eight goals and a combined 63 shots had the Utica Memorial Auditorium in a frenzy on Friday night as the Comets dropped a 5-3 decision to the Tigers.

-Benn Ferriero led the way for the Comets with a goal and two helpers, while Yannick Weber extended his point streak to six games with a goal and an assist.

-Patrick Mullen rounded out the scoring for the Comets with his fourth goal of the season.

-The Comets power-play went 2-for-3 in the game.

-Joackim Eriksson gave up five goals on 32 shots.

-Peter Andersson was the lone Comets skater to finish with a positive plus/minus as he finished plus-1.

-Ferriero led all skaters with six shots on goal.

Saturday, December 7: Adirondack Phantoms 3 – Utica Comets 1

-Darren Archibald’s third goal of the season was the lone-goal for the Comets as they dropped their third straight, losing 3-1 to the Phantoms on Saturday.

-The Comets couldn’t muster anything offensively in the game as they only fired 19 shots on the Phantoms net, five of those from Nicklas Jensen.

-Joe Cannata made 26 saves between the barber poles for the Comets.

-With the loss, the Comets are now 5-6-0-0 on the road this season.

-Archibald, Jensen, Frank Corrado and Alex Biega all finished plus-1 in the game.

- Brandon DeFazio took all three penalties for the Comets as the Phantoms went 2-for-3 on the man advantage.

Comet of the Week

In a week where offence was hard to come by, Benn Ferriero was able to pick up four points (2-2-4) to earn Comet of the Week honors. The Essex, Massachusetts product was in on four of the five goals the Comets scored in their three games, bringing his season total up to 16 points (9-7-16) in 22 games. After a slow start to the season, the 5-foot-11, 185-pounder has accumulated 15 points (8-7-15) in his last 17 games and currently leads the Comets with nine goals, four more then the next closest skater, while his 16 points are two off the team lead held by Pascal Pelletier.

Coming Up…

The Comets have their first of six three-in-three weekends as they host the Binghamton Senators (14-7-0-2) on Friday night, travel to Pennsylvania to take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (14-6-1-2) on Saturday before returning home to host the Lake Erie Monsters (12-10-0-1) on Sunday afternoon.
