Canucks Shoot Down Jets

Hunter Shinkaruk scored the game-winning goal with less than seven minutes remaining in the game, while Joacim Eriksson made 23 saves in net as the Vancouver Canucks skated to a 2-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday afternoon to close out the 2013 Young Stars Classic with a 3-1-0 record.

The Jets held a 1-0 lead after the first period, a period that was played mostly on special teams as the Canucks found themselves down a man on three occasions, while also having two power-plays.

Sacha Guimond knotted the score at one just over five minutes into the middle stanza, his second goal in as many games, as he banged home a slick cross-crease feed from Ludwig Blomstrand.

With 6:56 left in the third period, Bo Horvat one a key offensive zone face-off back to Ludwig Blomstrand, who found Henrik Tommernes at the point, who’s shot on goal rebound right to Shinkaruk and the Calgary, Alberta native was able to roof the puck for his first goal of the tournament, giving the Canucks the lead and eventual 2-1 victory.

The game was played in front of a standing-room only crowd at the Okanagan Hockey Academy Training Centre due to a previously scheduled concert at the South Okanagan Events Centre on Monday night.

Ty-Bits

--Shinkaruk also picked up an assist on the Canucks first goal, giving him two assists in the game.

--Although not credited on the official score sheet, Blomstrand not only set-up the first goal of the game, he also should have been credited with the second assist on the game-winner.

--Eriksson didn’t have to face a lot of shots, but made some big saves in the first period, including a few big ones while shorthanded to keep the Canucks in the game.

--Cole Cassels played in his fourth game of the tournament, as he was the only non-invitee to play in all four games. Cassels was one of the top players for the Canucks all tournament long.

--Adam De Champlain was on the losing end of a first period scrap with Jets defenseman Zach Bell, while Mitch Elliot squared off with Jets forward Yasin Cisse in a quick fight less than four minutes later.
