2013 Canucks Female Jamboree
Canucks Female JamboreeMarch 22-24, 2013
In its seventh year of operation, the Vancouver Canucks kicked off their annual Female Jamboree on March 22, 2013. While previous years have seen the event take place in Prince George, the 2013 edition took place at nearby Burnaby 8 Rinks. The Jamboree welcomed 150 female minor hockey players of varying skill levels from across BC between the ages of 5 and 13.
After taking in the opening ceremonies, hosted by Sonia Beeksma, this year’s girls were introduced to their new teammates and coaches, received their jerseys and brainstormed team names for the weekend. With a combination of experienced and first-time players making friends and competing alongside one another, the ensuing tournament was a testament to the Jamobree’s philosophy of fair play and sportsmanship.
In addition to the competitive segment of the three-day program, the Jamboree featured guest speakers Lilo Ljubisic, a five-time summer Paralympian, and Graham Thomas, head coach of the UBC Thunderbirds women’s hockey team. Ljubisic and Thomas shared their journeys in female athletics, inspiring the girls to succeed and have fun within and beyond their Jamboree experience. Team mascot Fin was also sure to make an appearance, crashing into the glass and having fun with the kids, as usual.
Special thanks to Tania Kenny from BC Hockey, Lilo Ljubisic and the Esteem Team, Graham Thomas and the UBC women’s ice hockey team, Tim Gillian, the Pacific Steelers, who helped the girls with their equipment, and, of course, Fin, for making the 7th annual Canucks Female Jamboree another great success!
