The Goods: Shark bit
Another solid effort, another shootout loss
The Vancouver Canucks outplayed the San Jose Sharks Tuesday night at Rogers Arena, but the scoreboard didn't reflect it in the end as they dropped a 3-2 shootout decision.
A first period goal by Scott Gomez, his first of the season, had the Sharks in front 1-0 after 20 minutes; Adam Burish was next to the first goal of the year party early in the second period and San Jose held a 2-0 lead just 4:43 into the middle frame.
The Canucks, having outshot the Sharks 17-7 in the first period, had the right idea hitting Antti Niemi was as many shots as possible and late in the second it finally paid off. First Henrik Sedin potted his fourth goal of the season off a rebound in front, then Jannik Hansen continued his hot play with his sixth goal, scored with 25 seconds left.
The third period was filled with back-and-forth chances, but no goals, ditto for overtime and off to a shootout the teams went. Chris Higgins was the only Canucks player to score, while Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski responded for the Sharks.
Cory Schneider was sensational all night finishing with 28 saves in his first career home start against San Jose.
Vancouver now hits the road for a three-game trek that has the Canucks in Columbus, Minnesota and again Columbus.
