Summer school is in
The Vancouver Canucks, in partnership with Okanagan Hockey School, launched their inaugural hockey school camp today at the Surrey Sport & Leisure Centre located at 16555 Fraser Highway, Surrey, BC. Players of every ability aged between 5-14 arrived early Sunday morning from all over the province to register for the first day of their week-long camp. Some parents mentioned their kids were up as early as 6am to avoid missing their registration times.
After a short orientation with the players and parents from Vice – President, Blair Noel the kids and parents made their way down to the dressing rooms to prepare to hit the ice. The first session of the day saw all the goalies from week one go on the ice with their head instructor, Jack O'Halloran , O’Halloran well versed at goaltending instruction had the netminders go over the basics of goaltending. This included stance work, foot movement and other skating techniques. By the end of the goalie session all the young goalies were exhausted.
The next group to hit the ice were the players of week one, every player was dressed and in the hallway well before their ice time just waiting to show off their skills. The on-ice sessions were led by the 9 year ExNHLer, veteran defenceman, Blake Wesley accompanied by a number of well versed assistants, Wesley has been working with the Okanagan Hockey School and leading on ice sessions all over North America for a number of years now.
This week plans to be an exciting week for all the young players and parents in attendance. Starting Wednesday August 8th the camp will have a visit from newly acquired Vancouver Canuck Jason Garrison with follow up visits later in the week from Canucks Alumni Dave Babych and fan favorite “Fin”.
The camp offers six levels of learning for camp attendees: players born between 2005 and 2007 are invited to register for Learn to Play; players born between 2000 and 2005 can register for Regular Skaters Program; a goaltender program is open to all goaltenders aged 5-14; players born between 2000 and 2001 are invited to attend the Defenceman Camp; and the most popular camp offered is the Battle and Compete Camp, open to players born between 1998 and 2001.
