Boy Meets World
You’ve got mail!
I wish my computer actually said that when an email arrived. Instead there’s a ping sound, typically followed by a groan from me.
That wasn’t the case late last week. I was more than happy to receive the following email from Joanne.
Please ask Joe Labate about his love of the TV show Boy Meets World. The show ended a while ago and I’m curious about him saying it was one of his favourite shows in a Canucks story on him from a while ago.
The story in question is Size, skill & smarts, a Canucks.com feature by prospects writer Tyson Giuriato, published a few weeks ago. During the Q&A, LaBate responded to a question about his favourite television shows with the following:
“My favorite TV Shows are How I Met Your Mother, Spartacus, Terra Nova, and Boy Meets World, to name a few.”
Boy Meets World? Like Boy Meets World – Boy Meets World?
Yes, THAT Boy Meets World.
Cory Matthews, Shawn Hunter, Topanga Lawrence, Eric Matthews, and of course, George Feeny.
The sitcom ran on ABC for seven seasons from 1993 to 2000 as part of an amazing TGIF line-up; Boy Meets World, or BMW as it used to be known, chronicled the everyday life of Cory Matthews, played by Ben Savage. It was funny, not hilarious, but funny enough that it made for appointment viewing back in the day.
I can’t stress the back in the day part of that last sentence enough.
It seems LaBate never got the memo.
“I still watch it sometimes,” laughed LaBate. “I own some of the seasons.”
LaBate went through a stretch of Christmases where he was given seasons of Boy Meets World on DVD from his siblings. He not only still owns them, he puts them on once and a while.
To get to the bottom of this 19-year-old's fandom with the show, which began the same year he was born, I presented him with a Boy Meets World quiz, one about the show that would also determine which character from BMW he is.
This goes down as one of the strangest interviews either of us have ever been a part of.
“This is crazy, I’m not a diehard fan, I just said I liked the show! Whatever, let’s do this.”

Labate answered five of 10 questions correctly for a score of 5-on-10. This removes his 'super-fan' status and replaces it with 'someone who is knowledgeable about the show'.
Disappointing, I know.
As for which Boy Meets World character LeBate is, he fits the bill as Jack Hunter, Shawn's older, suave, debonair and mildly confused half-brother, who debuts in the fifth season premiere.
And with that, I leave you with a hilarious quote from Cory Matthews: "Okay, someone explain to me about duckies before I hit him with a spoon."
Forget it, only LaBate knows what I'm talking about.
