Canucks Report: Downward dogs & dancing

DOWNWARD DOGS & DANCING
By Derek Jory
Saturday marked the third day of 2012 Prospect Summer Development Camp and the on-ice portion of activities were cranked up a few notches.
Day 1 was on-ice testing with some skating analysis, Day 2 the players were split into small groups of forwards and defencemen to work on skills, while Day 3 was on the verge of a full practice and the effort reflected the situation.
Vancouver Canucks skills coach Glenn Carnegie put the players through the paces and judging by the tired faces on the prospects once finished, it was a workout and a half.
“Today we added a little bit more game-like drills, added some 1-on-1s and 2-on-1s to get the guys doing a little bit more contact, we also did some 3-on-3 battle drills down low," said Carnegie. "Then we actually had a scrimmage because some of the scouts wanted to see a little bit more of the players’ hockey sense as opposed to drills with no one checking them.
“It was a good session.”
Sunday morning's on-ice activities will be much of the same, with the highlight of the week coming Monday during the 4-on-4 challenge.
Stretch and strut
The prospects spent Saturday afternoon again split into two groups taking part in yoga and a team building exercise. While Group A relaxed in such poses as the “pewww I’m a rocket ship,” the “what’s over there” and the “I’m a little teapot,” Group B was divided into four groups, with each unit first standing in the spotlight and the prospects each introducing someone from their group, giving them a nickname and revealing three things that were previous unknown about them.
On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being a Pauly Shore movie and 10 being that YouTube video of the old lady afraid of the laser pointer on her leg, the first activity was a 4/10.
In those same groups the players then had to pick a movie and reenact a scene from it. If some of these guys don’t succeed in hockey, acting is definitely a possibility because this was a 7/10 for humour. I’m not entirely sure what all the movies were, but the players sold it. Academy Awards for all.
Last but not least was a group dance competition set to LMFAO’s Sexy and I Know It. The groups were given five minutes each to choreograph a routine before taking centre stage in the middle of the Canucks locker room and busting a move.
It saddens me that you weren’t there to witness it for yourself.
Other than the fact that this produced enough laughs to last the rest of camp and was clearly a 10/10, there’s not much to tell. Mere words can’t do justice to Nicklas Jensen’s intense focus or Brendan Gaunce’s swag or Joseph LaBate’s rhythm.
We filmed the dancing, but you’ll have to wait for it to air. Trust me, your patience will be greatly rewarded.
And thus concludes another day of prospects camp. Three down, three to go.
