Canucks re-sign goaltender Cory Schneider

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have re-signed goaltender Cory Schneider. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Cory has displayed tremendous poise and professionalism since joining our organization,” said President and General Manager Mike Gillis. “He has proven himself as a leader on and off the ice and has shown an unwavering commitment to being the best at his position.”

Schneider, 26, finished the 2011.12 season with a record of 20-8-1, appearing in 33 games for Vancouver. He ranked second in the NHL for highest save percentage (.937) and third in the NHL for lowest goals against average (1.96).

In his first full season with Vancouver in 2010.11, the Marblehead, MA, native compiled a winning 16-4-2 record including his first career shutout. He finished the 2010.11 season with a 2.23 GAA and was a co-recipient (with Roberto Luongo) of the William M. Jennings Trophy. The Jennings Trophy is an annual NHL award given to “the goalkeeper(s) having played a minimum of 25 games for the team with the fewest goals scored against it.”

Schneider made his NHL playoff debut in the 2011 postseason, dressing in five games and posting a .915 save percentage. In the 2012 postseason, he led all playoff goalies in lowest goals against (1.31) and highest save percentage (.960), securing his first career NHL playoff win April 18/12 at Los Angeles.

The 6’2”, 195 lbs. goaltender played 136 regular season games with the AHL Manitoba Moose, compiling a winning record of 84-45-5. In 34 Calder Cup playoff games, Schneider backstopped the Moose to a 17-15 record including a trip to the Calder Cup Finals in 2009.

In 2009, Schneider was awarded the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award as the AHL Goaltender of the Year as well as being named the starting goaltender for Planet USA at the 2009 AHL All-Star game. During the 2009 season, Schneider set a Moose record for the longest winning streak, securing 13 consecutive victories.

Prior to playing in the AHL, Schneider played three seasons with Boston College where he set a school record for most shutouts (8) in a single season in 2005.06.

Schneider’s international experience includes representing the U.S. at the 2007 IIHF World Championship in Russia, 2005 and 2006 World Junior Championship experience and a silver medal finish at the under 18 World Championship in 2003.04.

Schneider was originally selected 26th overall by Vancouver in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
