Canucks First Strides at Rogers Arena
A different set of athletes took to the ice on Dec. 5th as BC Minor Hockey players showed what they can do.
In between big Canucks victories against the Flames and Avalanche, it was the little guys turn to perform on the ice at Rogers Arena. 72 initiation and novice level minor hockey players took to the ice as part of the Canucks First Strides program, a program designed to teach these young players the first strides in becoming a good person as well as an accomplished athlete.
Participants came from all across BC including Vancouver Island, Princeton, and 100 Mile House to take part in this special event. Experienced BC Hockey Course Conductors and minor hockey coaches led the excited young players through on-and-off ice activities and games.
The group was separated into two, and took turns partaking in an off ice session in the Norm Jewison Media room and an on ice session working on skating and puck-handling. Emphasis throughout the evening was placed on teamwork, fair play, and making new friends.
Some special guests were in attendance working with the kids on the ice. Fin, Cody Hodgson, and David Booth partook in the various drills and games and made sure that everyone was having a great time. Following the session, the players handed out autographs to the minor hockey stars and wished them luck for the rest of the season.
Parents also had the opportunity to participate in a workshop led by BC Hockey Health and Safety Risk Manager, Anne Deitch. Deitch discussed the important role parents play in minor hockey and how they can positively support their growing hockey players.
The evening was a huge success and enjoyed by all those involved.
