Vancouver Canucks sign left wing Marco Sturm

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have signed left wing Marco Sturm.

Sturm, 32, split the 2010.11 season between the Los Angeles Kings, recording nine points (4-5-9) in 17 games, and the Washington Capitals, collecting seven points (1-6-7) in 18 games. Sturm also registered three points (1-2-3) and four penalty minutes, playing in all nine of Washington’s playoff games in 2011.

The Dingolfing, Germany native has appeared in 890 career NHL games, recording 482 points (239-243-482) and 421 penalty minutes over the span of 13 seasons with the San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, Kings and Capitals. In 61 career playoff games, the 6’0”, 194 pound forward has collected 22 points (9-13-22).

On the international stage, Sturm has represented Germany at the World Junior Championships (1995 and 1996), World Championships (1997, 2001 and 2008) and Olympics (1998). Sturm was named as captain of Team Germany for the 2006 Olympics but was unable to play due to injury.

Sturm was originally selected 21st overall in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks.
