Scholarships presented by the Vancouver Canucks Alumni Association
 

The Vancouver Canucks Alumni Assocation in partnership with the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association presented scholarships to graduating high school students in support of their university endevours. The awards were presented by former Canucks captin Orland Kurtenbach, and PCAHA President Dave Buck on Wednesday, May 25 at the PCAHA office.

The Vancouver Canucks Community Service Bursary ($500) was presented to Jared Delarge in recognition of his outstanding service to the community.

Jared played Midget for the Vancouver Thunderbird MHA and attends St. George’s School. He would like to attend Queen’s University, the University of Waterloo or the University of Ottawa to study History and Education. For the past six years he has helped with his school’s Hamper drive, volunteered with the Reindeer Run, and helped with the Can Drive. This summer Jared will be going to Peru to help build a school, a project he helped fundraise for. At school he is a tutor for French and History as well as being a prefect. His coach said he “brought a very sporting spirit, energy, and always a smile to the dressing room.” His headmaster said he is a wonderful young man and a very positive, well-respected member of the school community.

The Vancouver Canucks Bursary ($500) was presented to Dexter Allen in recognition of his academic achievement and service to the community.

Dexter played for Richmond Minor Hockey Association and plans to attend the University of British Columbia Okanagan campus to study journalism. After getting his Bachelors degree, he would like to transfer to Queen’s University. Dexter volunteered for registration at the BC senior games, was a green ambassador at the Richmond Olympic Ozone, took part in the 2010 Relay for Life and was a scorekeeper at his school’s badminton, volleyball, and basketball tournaments. Dexter is said to be a “reliable and motivated individual, capable of balancing a demanding course load with his extracurricular/sports related activities”

The Vancouver Canucks Alumni Association Scholarships ($750 each) are awarded in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and service to the community.

The Dennis Kearns Scholarship Award was presented to Sarah Hillsdon.

Sarah is a player from the Langley Girls Ice Hockey Association. She plans to study Human Kinetics at UBC. She is a volunteer with the Langley RCMP hockey program for youth at risk, with the West Coast Softball Academy summer camp, and with several cancer fundraising events. Sarah competes at a high level in girls’ softball. At school as a member of the Leadership class she tutors students, runs intramurals and other school activities, and was a scorekeeper for all sports. She is a member of the Grad committee, the Athletic leadership committee, and the Yearbook. She played on the basketball and hockey teams. Her coach said she has outstanding athletic ability, ‘but more importantly she has vision, passion and leadership abilities beyond her years.”

The Orland Kurtanback Scholarship Award was presented to Daniel Jenkins.

Daniel is a Midget Tier 1 player from the Vancouver Thunderbirds and attends the Prince of Wales Mini School. He has applied to and been accepted in both Arts and Engineering Faculties at Queens University and Western. Daniel has been a volunteer for Starlight, a charity that helps sick children and their families; was captain of the Prince of Wales Canstruction team, a charity that has donated thousands of cans of food to the Vancouver Food Bank; and has been a host for the Vancouver School District Student Leadership conference for the past four years. At school he is a member of the student council and the sustainability committee, assistant captain of the school rugby team and an assistant coach on the bantam boys rugby team.

The Pat Quinn Scholarship Award was presented to Sabrina Rai.

Sabrina plays for the Abbotsford Female Hockey association and is a student at Rick Hanson Secondary School. She plans to attend the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. In the community, she has volunteered for Hearts for Haiti, Habitat for Humanity, Adopt a Family, a community Christmas project, and as a tutor for band at the Eugene Reimer Middle School. In school, Sabrina has assisted grade nines through the Link Leader program, contributed to the Prom Committee and Scholarship Team, is Chief in Editor of the yearbook, serves as a peer mediator to help solve conflicts, and is part of the school’s jazz and concert bands. She represented Abbotsford at the Encounter with Canada conference in Ottawa. Her counselor said “Whatever the task may be, she is one of those students who is always willing and able to help”.

The Stan Smyl Scholarship Award ($3000) was awarded to the outstanding applicant to the PCAHA Scholarship Program, Terence Trusdale.

Terence is a Midget Tier 1 player from Surrey MHA. He was a member of the BC Hockey Midget Tier 1 Gold Medal winning team this year and is a student at Panorama Ridge Secondary. He plans to attend Capilano University to study Jazz music for two years and then go to UBC for four years to achieve a double major in music and science. Terence also aspires to attend medical school. He volunteered at the Closing Ceremonies for the Olympics, the Christmas Bureau, and the Salvation Army Christmas breakfast. He has helped cleaning local parks and creeks and playing at numerous free shows as a solo piano player or with his jazz band. Terence also volunteers at the Acute Care for Elderly patients unit at the Memorial Hospital every Sunday. He has won awards at both the Carillon and Kiwanis music festivals. At school, Terence is peer tutor in Math and Science, is a member of the school hockey and weightlifting teams, and plays with the Panorama Ridge Jazz Combo.
