Canucks for Kids Fund donates $5 million to BC Children's Hospital
Vancouver, BC – The Canucks for Kids Fund is pleased to announce it has made a gift of $5 million to BC Children’s Hospital in support of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Campaign for BC Children as well as the Diabetes Research Laboratory at the Child & Family Research Institute.
“We feel fortunate to be able to support BC Children’s Hospital with this gift,” said Victor de Bonis, COO, Canucks Sports & Entertainment and vice president of the Canucks for Kids Fund Board. “The care provided at BC Children’s Hospital is instrumental to the health and well-being of so many children and their families across British Columbia. This gift is our opportunity to give back to a community that has given us so much.”
The Canucks for Kids Fund (CFKF) has had a longstanding partnership with BC Children's Hospital, providing the Hospital with substantial in-kind and promotional support. In addition, CFKF has granted more than $1.3 million to the Hospital to assist in many areas including childhood diabetes research.
CFKF is in its 25th year of giving back to children’s charities in British Columbia and has given more than $33 million in that span. During the 2009.10 season, CFKF donated more than $3.3 million to a variety of children’s charities across the province. CFKF is dedicated to supporting children’s charities in our province and has played a key role in creating and sustaining Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, Canucks Autism Network, Canucks Family Education Centre, Canucks Centre for BC Hockey and a number of educational programs. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation has now raised $125 million toward its $200-million campaign goal. The Campaign for BC Children is supporting the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital. The hospital is the only facility in the province in which BC’s seriously ill and critically injured children have access to a combination of a broad range of expertise in pediatric medicine, research programs, advanced technology and intensive care.
“This $5-million gift from the Vancouver Canucks and the Canucks for Kids Fund demonstrates great vision when it comes to child health,” said Don Lindsay, president and CEO of Teck Resources Ltd. and chair of the Campaign for BC Children. “By supporting the construction of a new BC Children’s Hospital and diabetes research, the Canucks for Kids Fund is ensuring generations of BC children will receive the very best medical care and attacking the roots of what has become a childhood epidemic.”
The Diabetes Research Laboratory at the Child and Family Research Institute is home to a world-renowned team of diabetes investigators led by childhood diabetes researcher, Dr. Bruce Verchere. The team includes outstanding clinicians and scientists who aim to understand the causes of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in children, and ultimately hope to develop new treatments to prevent or cure this devastating disease. The team uses a multi-disciplinary approach that includes both clinical and laboratory bench research, and has particular strengths in transplantation of insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas; stem cells; understanding autoimmunity and the triggers of type 1 diabetes; childhood obesity and metabolism, particularly in vulnerable pediatric populations; and inflammation.
About the Campaign for BC Children
Priorities of the Campaign for BC Children are the construction of a new hospital, which will include a pediatric intensive care unit, emergency department, diagnostic and imaging facilities, operating rooms and other acute care areas; the relocation of child development and rehabilitation services from Sunny Hill Health Centre in East Vancouver to the site of BC Children's; and Child Health BC, an initiative of BC Children's Hospital with the goal of ensuring all BC children have access to a consistent standard of specialized care no matter where in the province they live.
BC Children's Hospital Foundation launched the campaign in April 2008 with the support of the Government of British Columbia. To date, BC Children's Hospital Foundation has received campaign donations from thousands of British Columbians in over 220 BC communities. To date, British Columbians have contributed $125 million toward the $200-million campaign.
