Henrik Sedin named Canucks team captain
Daniel Sedin, Ryan Kesler, Manny Malhotra and Kevin Bieksa are named Alternate Captains.

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager, Mike Gillis and Head Coach, Alain Vigneault have appointed centre, Henrik Sedin team Captain. Sedin becomes the 13th Captain in club history.
“Henrik Sedin embodies the principles of this organization and all of the qualities of a leader through his honesty, integrity and discipline,” said Gillis. “Henrik is an exemplary leader who inspires teammates with a work ethic and desire to continually evolve his game. We are proud to name him as team Captain.”
Sedin, 30, becomes the 13th Captain in Canucks history. He will be supported by Daniel Sedin, Ryan Kesler, Kevin Bieksa and Manny Malhotra in their roles as Alternate Captains. Sedin joins a respected and esteemed group who have previously worn the ‘C’ for the Canucks including, Orland Kurtenbach, Stan Smyl, Trevor Linden, Mark Messier, Markus Naslund and Roberto Luongo.
“I am truly honoured to be named Captain of the Vancouver Canucks,” said Sedin. “I have great respect for the Captains who led the team before me and feel privileged to know them or have played alongside them during their careers as Canucks. With the support of Daniel, Ryan, Kevin and Manny I look forward to leading this team.”
Sedin enters his 10th NHL season and has played his entire career as a Canuck since being selected by Vancouver third overall in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. In 2009.10 Sedin enjoyed a milestone season capturing the Art Ross Trophy as the League scoring leader with 112 points (29-83-112) and the Hart Memorial Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in the NHL. Sedin became the first player in franchise history to win the NHL scoring title, setting a new club record for most points and assists recorded in one season.
Sedin ranks fourth all-time in scoring with 572 points (138-434-572) in 728 games played. His 434 assists rank first all-time and with 728 career games in a Vancouver uniform, Sedin sits sixth all-time in games played. Henrik has represented Team Sweden at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympic Games, winning gold in Turin, Italy in 2006.
Over the span of a decade, Henrik has been an active member in the community, supporting charitable initiatives with the Canucks in addition to personal donations. Prior to the beginning of the season, Henrik shared his support of literacy through the Raise-A-Reader campaign and has been a strong proponent of education at all ages. Henrik has also participated in a number of visits to children’s facilities, with adolescents facing chronic diseases, including BC Children’s Hospital and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. In March of 2010, Henrik and Daniel Sedin, together with their wives Johanna and Marinette, made a gift of $1.5 million to help build a new BC Children’s Hospital. Their gift was in support of the hospital’s Campaign for BC Children, and specifically to the Intensive Care Unit and Diagnostics and Imaging area in the new hospital.
