Canucks to kick off 40th anniversary season with special festivities

A rollover of $80,179 to be added to the 50/50 winner’s Jackpot on October 9th

Vancouver, B.C. – The Vancouver Canucks announced today that the club will kick off their 40th Anniversary celebration on October 9th with a 7:00 pm game against the Los Angeles Kings, the first opponent the Canucks faced in the NHL 40 years ago to the day.

Opening Night, presented by Rogers, will begin with a 40th Anniversary pre-game ceremony. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats no later than 6:50 pm for the special celebration. Each fan in attendance will receive a commemorative opening night pin. A limited number of collector pins will be available in the Canucks Team Store for purchase. A total of 10,000 magnetic Canucks game and broadcast schedules will also be distributed post game. For those that don’t get a copy of the Magnetic Schedule at the game, fans can visit their local Rogers store to pick up their copy while supplies last starting October 10.

PARTY ON THE PLAZA
Prior to the home opener, the Canucks will host the Party on the Plaza, beginning at 4:00 pm on the North Plaza at Rogers Arena. The Party on the Plaza, made possible thanks to Save-On-Foods, Grimm’s, Van Houtte, Coca-Cola, The Beat 94.5, 103.5 QM/FM, Team Radio, Playstation and MBNA will have live music, fun games and free giveaways and will be the ideal location for fans of all generations to gather prior to the kick-off of the 2010.11 NHL season and Canucks 40th Anniversary. CANUCKS TEAM STORE
A number of commemorative 40th Anniversary items will be available to Canucks fans this season, including a commemorative pin collection and Canucks at 40, a book that explores the “behind-the-scenes” stories of the most animated characters and events that took place in the franchise’s history since 1970. The official Canucks 40th Anniversary collector jersey and 40th anniversary patch, as worn on the ice by Canucks players this season, will also be available.

A special pin book will be available for purchase in the team store and online. The book, available for $19.99 will come with the initial pin and spots to house the entire collection. A total of 20 pins, featuring special Canucks moments and players, will be made available throughout the season. Only 1000 of each pin will be made available for purchase.

These items will be available at the Canucks Team Store in Rogers Arena and a designated 40th Anniversary walk-in store at games, located at section 328. There will also be some select 40th Anniversary items available at the NHL store online for fans outside of the Lower Mainland.

40th ANNIVERSARY
The Vancouver Canucks 40th Anniversary, presented by Chevrolet, HSBC Bank Canada, Playnow.com and Save-On-Foods, is a season long celebration that will honour the most significant Canucks and events since the inception of the team. During the 2010.11 season, the Vancouver Canucks will wear its original sweater for five games, launch the Ring of Honour to forever immortalize the franchise’s heroes in a permanent display inside Rogers Arena, unveil ‘40 Stories-40 Nights’ celebrating Canucks heroes and highlights at each home game and retire Markus Naslund’s number 19 to the rafters of Rogers Arena for only the third time in club history.

Each game throughout the 2010.11 season will feature unique storytelling and other surprise elements, exploring the Canucks 40 years of history. On October 11th against the Florida Panthers, the first member of the Canucks to have his sweater retired, Stan Smyl, will be honoured in-game with features looking at his career. The first Ring of Honour night will see the Canucks first captain Orland Kurtenbach inducted on October 26th against the Colorado Avalanche.

CANUCKS FOR KIDS FUND 50/50 DRAW, PRESENTED BY RHINO.CA
The Vancouver Canucks announced today that once again, a carryover of unclaimed 50/50 funds from the 2009.10 season will be added to the jackpot for the Vancouver Canucks home opener against the Los Angeles Kings on October 9th. A total of $80,179 will be added to the winner’s share of the evening’s Canucks for Kids Fund 50/50 draw, presented by Rhino.ca. Last season’s home opener saw the lucky winner take home $123,885.

The Canucks for Kids Fund 50/50 draws, presented by Rhino.ca, see half of the draw’s total earnings given to one lucky fan with the winning 50/50 ticket. The other fifty percent of the proceeds go to the Canucks for Kids Fund and are granted to children’s charities, including Canucks Autism Network and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. Last season, $992,423 was raised by the Canucks for Kids Fund through the 50/50 draw.

The Canucks for Kids Fund dedicates resources to assist charities who support children’s health and wellness, foster the development of grassroots hockey, and facilitate and encourage education in British Columbia. Thanks to the generosity of our fans, donors, players, employees and sponsor partners, the CFKF has granted over $32 million to charities in British Columbia over the last two decades serving over 85 different organizations helping them to reach their goals

Core beneficiaries of grants include; Canucks Autism Network which strives to enhance the quality of life for families living with autism in British Columbia; Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, which offers specialized care for B.C. children living with life-threatening conditions; and BC Children’s Hospital Foundation for adolescent mental health, diabetes research, gastroenterology and pediatric playroom.
