Vancouver, BC – The National Hockey League announced today that Vancouver Canucks forward Henrik Sedin was named as the 2009-10 Hart Trophy winner as “the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team” during the 2010 NHL Awards. This marks the first time in franchise history that a Vancouver Canucks has won the Hart Trophy.

Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals were also named as finalists for the 2009-10 Hart Trophy.

Sedin finished the season with a league-lead 112 points (29-83-112), winning the Art Ross Trophy for the first time in franchise history.

The Ornskoldsvik, Sweden native set three new franchise records in 2009-10: becoming the club’s all-time assist leader, passing Trevor Linden; eclipsing Pavel Bure’s single season points record; and establishing the single-season assists record, surpassing the previous record he posted in 2006-07.

He also led the League in assists (83) and set a number of career highs in offensive categories: goals (29), assists (83) and points (112).

History
The Hart Memorial Trophy was presented by the National Hockey League in 1960 after the original Hart Trophy was retired to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The original Hart Trophy was donated to the NHL in 1924 by Dr. David A. Hart, father of Cecil Hart, former manager-coach of the Montreal Canadiens.
