Canucks sign Ryan Kesler to long-term contract extension

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that forward Ryan Kesler has agreed to terms on a six-year contract extension through the 2015-2016 season.
“Today is an exciting day for the Canucks organization,” said Mike Gillis. “Ryan Kesler has excelled as a two-way player and in his role as an alternate captain. Ryan has showcased his ability to perform under extreme pressure and we are looking forward to continuing to see Ryan develop into one of the League’s premier players.”
Kesler, 25, is in his sixth season with the Canucks and has established career highs in assists (45), points (66), power play goals (12) and game-winners (4) with 11 games remaining in the 2009-10 season.
The 2009-10 campaign also marks the third consecutive season that Kesler has recorded 20 or more goals. He is tied for 21st in League scoring (21-45-66) and tied for 6th in power play goals (11) this season.Kesler also established the fifth longest scoring streak this season, recording 15 points (6-9-15) in 13 games played from February 6 to March 14, 2010.
The 6’2”, 202-pound centre has appeared in 390 NHL games, recording 204 points (85-119-204) and 337 penalty minutes.
Following the 2008-09 season, Kesler was nominated for the NHL’s Selke Trophy for the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game and was awarded the Cyclone Taylor Award as the Vancouver Canucks MVP.
In September 2008, Kesler was named as a Canucks alternate captain, a title he has held since that date. Kesler has also appeared in 11 career playoff games, recording four points (2-2-4).
Earlier this year, the Livonia, Michigan native has the opportunity to represent the United States of America at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The Canucks forward appeared in six games and notched two goals en route to a silver medal. This marked the third time Kesler had won a medal on the international stage. He previously won gold at the World Junior Championship in 2004 and the World Under-18 Championship in 2002.
Kesler was drafted by the Canucks 23rd overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
