Ask a Canuck - Christian Ehrhoff
The new defensive addition to the Canucks from Moers, Germany answers your questions.
Vancouver defenceman Christian Ehrhoff, 27, is in his first season with the Canucks after spending his last three with the San Jose Sharks. So far with the Canucks the 6’2”, 200 lbs German native has 23 points (9-14-23) and an impressive plus-22 rating in 48 games and will be one of the go-to guys for Team Germany in the 2010 Winter Olympics here in Vancouver.
With a strong defensive presence and amazing skating abilities, Ehrhoff is a necessity on the ice and is second on the team in playing time. The skilled and dependable defenceman took some time away to answer your questions.
How would you compare the Canucks system to the one in San Jose? (Larry F, Surrey, BC)
It’s a pretty similar system. The only difference is that we just want the D to be involved in the offence a lot more.
Where is your favourite place to go to in Vancouver, and why? (Catherine T, Vancouver, BC)
My favourite place would be my house. I live in a townhouse, it’s not my house but we rent it. I just like to relax at home most of the time. But there are a lot of good places to go. Probably if I go out of the house I like to see movies at the movie theatre.
Do you feel you have an advantage or will be looked to a lot more on Team Germany in the Olympics because it's taking place in Vancouver? (Devon D, Burnaby, BC)
Yeah I hope there will be some fans cheering for us. It’s definitely nice for me. I know the rink and everything and obviously the city so it’s really nice.
If you were chosen to participate in the Amazing Race, which teammate would you choose to be on your team? (Jennifer A, Abbotsford, BC)
I would choose Alexander Edler. He’s in pretty good shape and I think he’d be smart enough and he’d be a good guy to hang out with too.
Which other two players would you want to race against?
Against Raycroft and Luongo just because they’re goalies.
Do you play video games? Which console and which game is your favourite? (Oliver M, Coquitlam, BC)
Not since I had a baby but I have a Playstation 3 and I play Fifa Soccer on there, it’s my favourite game. I have the Wii in Germany which is fun if you have people over and entertain but for myself when I play I like Fifa.
What is something you miss about Germany that just isn't the same here? (Chelsey L, North Vancouver, BC)
Well there’s no Autobahn here, so that would be the most different. But it’s pretty easy to adapt here because everyone’s so friendly and people make it easy for you.
Who is the one person who stood by you and encouraged you throughout your hockey years? (May Ying, Richmond, BC)
It has to be my parents. They supported me a lot, they drove me to every practice and without them I wouldn’t be here.
Which genre of music do you listen to the most? (Tiffany C, Vancouver, BC)
Probably just like pop rock, whatever plays on the radio pretty much. I listen to German music once in awhile too but mostly it’s just whatever plays on the radio.
If you had never pursued a career in the NHL, which career path would you have chosen? (Gurpreet D, Surrey, BC)
I would’ve been a professional golfer. But I’m not really good at it. In the summer I just play golf, and I used to play a little tennis. I like soccer too, so that would be one of the sports too.Editor’s Note: When Ehrhoff was a junior, he competed for Germany's under-18 team in 1999 and 2000, then competed in Division-1 of the under-20 World Junior Championships in 2001 and 2002, and earned back to back Top Defenceman honours, and was league leader in both seasons for scoring.
