Live to Give - Canuck Place

Canuck Place Children's Hospice is the Canucks for Kids Fund luminary charity and has been serving BC families since opening its doors since 1995.

What do they do?

Canuck Place Children's Hospice provides specialized pediatric palliative care for children living with a life-threatening illness and support for their families throughout British Columbia.

Whether a life is measured in days, weeks, or months, children deserve the opportunity to learn, develop and grow. Canuck Place encourages each child to ‘embrace life’ and believes in enhancing the quality of whatever time a child may have left by empowering them to live fully and joyfully.

What made you select them?

I had been to Canuck Place once before to help Fin celebrate his birthday, so I was able to witness the amazing work this organization does. There's nothing quite like seeing a happy, smiling child and I knew that by helping deck out Canuck Place for the holiday season there'd be many more smiles to come.

What was the best part – the highlight of your day?

Without a doubt the highlight for me was seeing the finished product. Canuck Place is already a masterful place and to see it covered in decorations was almost overwhelming - and that was during the day. I can't wait to see the handiwork of all the Canucks decorators lit up!

A close second highlight was having the head groundskeeper give TC Carling and myself the thumbs up for our craftsmanship with holiday lights and wreaths. Although TC and I look like a decorating dream team, we're not. But we managed to fool eveyone on this day.

What did you learn today about giving back?

That it doesn't take much to make a big difference. We had a big crew at Canuck Place so we accomplished a lot, but even with only half of us, there still would have been some real decorating damage done. When everyone chips in for a common cause or goal, it doesn't take much to make it happen.

Why is it important for you to give back personally and as an employee of Canucks Sports & Entertainment?

I'm not sure what the exact saying is, but it's something along the lines of "to whom much is given, much is expected." We, employees of the Canucks Sports & Entertainment, are fortunate to work for a company that fully embraces its responsibility in the community. Much is given to the Canucks organization and to be able to give back and help those who are making a drastic difference in the lives of others is beyond words. It warms the heart.
