Community of Terrace to host Canucks vs Islanders in NHL pre-season game

Vancouver, B.C. – The Vancouver Canucks in association with Kraft Canada and the CBC are pleased to announce that after a record number of votes, Terrace, British Columbia was selected by Canadians as the most passionate hockey city in Canada and winner of Kraft Hockeyville 2009.

As Hockeyville 2009, Terrace will host the Canucks and New York Islanders in a NHL pre-season game on September 14, 2009. Game highlights will be televised during a one-hour Kraft Hockeyville special broadcast on CBC television. In addition to hosting two NHL teams, the community of Terrace receives a $100,000 grand prize from Kraft Canada to be used towards arena upgrades.

“The Vancouver Canucks are proud to host the New York Islanders in one of the most passionate hockey communities in our province, Terrace, British Columbia,” said President and CEO of Canucks Sports & Entertainment, Chris Zimmerman. “This is a well-deserved award; the people of Terrace are enthusiastic supporters of the Vancouver Canucks and NHL hockey and reflect the incredible fans we have here in B.C.”

Terrace edged out more than 7,100 entries across Canada recording 1,923,456 votes collected via telephone, online and texting. Terrace joins previous Kraft Hockeyville winners Roberval, QC (2008); North Bay, ON (2007); and Salmon River, NS (2006). The four runners-up from this year receive $25,000 from Kraft Canada towards arena upgrades.

Final voting results from Kraft Hockeyville 2009 exceeded all previous records totaling 6,390,999 votes.

Kraft Hockeyville 2009 began as a national search for Canada’s most spirited hockey town. Communities across Canada were invited to submit a short essay with supporting photos that depicted their hometown pride and passion for hockey. Kraft Hockeyville 2009 partners include Kraft Canada, CBC, the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and the National Hockey League (NHL).
