Offside with Kyle Wellwood

Since being claimed off waivers in the offseason, Kyle Wellwood has been gone full circle with the Canucks. He's been to AHL, he's been through media scrutiny, and he's become a fan favourite too.

His hockey story's been publicized enough, get to know the Windsor native better with some things you didn't know about him.

Go offside with Kyle Wellwood.

What is your favourite thing about your hometown?

The baseball park by where I grew up. And, of course, my friends and family too.

What's the story behind your number?

My current number is just the one from training camp. I had 97 for about six years and that's my favourite number. My grandpa liked [Gordie] Howe and [Ted] Lindsay and I wore it for him.

What question do you always get asked?

They ask about my small stick.

What is the most embarrassing thing that's happened to you on the ice?

I got hit and my helmet got turned backwards so I couldn't see. It was... a big guy, [Andy] Sutton, I think. Editor's note: Andy Sutton is 6'6", 245lbs and Wellwood is 5'10", 180. A bit of a size discrepancy...

Who was your favourite player growing up?

Alex Mogilny.

What would you do if you were NHL commissioner for a day?

I'd played four-on-four in regulation.

It bugs me when my parents...

Give me hockey advice. They tend to do that a lot but that may be all hockey parents and not just mine.

If not hockey, then...

Maybe... a writer. Maybe for a newspaper?

Who on the team would you choose to be your partner on the Amazing Race?

Henrik Sedin because he speaks multiple languages. I'm not sure how we'd do but I think we'd do well in Europe as long as we're in one of the Scandanavian countries so he can talk to people there.

What is the worst lockerroom smell?

Rob Davison. Did anyone else say that? Editor's note: No, not yet but it's still early.  The common answer so far has been Alex Burrows - although we have not confirmed if that is true.

A sporting event I wish I was there for...

Wimbledom when [Rafael] Nadal and [Roger] Federer played each other in the final. I'm a big tennis fan. When I was in Toronto I got to see Federer win that tournament but it's not the same as Wimbledon.

What is your favourite spectator moment?

When I got to see Sergei Fedorov score in Detroit when he played for the Wings.

A concert you would you pay anything to see...

M.I.A.

A movie you would never get sick of watching...

No question, it would be Forrest Gump

Last place I’d ever be seen...

McDonald’s
