Alumni Activities Past and Present
Golf is always a favorite, and on Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 it was a great day for the Canucks Alumni, as they participated in an annual tournament. This tournament was the Little League Celebrity Golf Classic, played at Meadow Gardens Golf Course. It included Alumni Orland Kurtenbach, Kirk McLean, Richard Brodeur, Dean Malkoc, Blair MacDonald, Christ Oddeifson, and Gerry Sillars. The money earned from this event was generously donated to the Canucks for Kids Fund.
On July 21st and 22nd, a number of the Alumni members travelled up to Prince George to take part in the Commonwealth Cup Charity Golf Tournament. Those included were Dennis Kearns, John Grisdale, Eddie Hatoum, Garry Monahan, and Darcy Rota. Because of the presence of the Canucks Alumni, the City of Prince George named those two days as “Vancouver Canucks Days”, and raised the Canucks flag at City Hall. The Tournament was a success, and the Alumni brought home $5350, which they kindly donated to Canuck Place.
Another event that the Canucks Alumni took part in during the summer was the Ryder Cup Golf Tournament. This tournament takes place annually at The Falls Golf Club in Chilliwack. This event proved to be a lot of fun as many of the Alumni got together for another beautiful summer day on the fairways.
While golf tournaments may be a popular activity, they’re not the only activity the Alumni took part in. The Vancouver Canucks Alumni were also represented at a couple of local Vancouver Canadians baseball games. On June 21st Dave Tomlinson threw out the first pitch at a Canadians game vs. the Tri-City Dust Devils. Then later on July 12th John Craighead came out to a game against the Spokane Indians, throwing out the first pitch. Both games drew large crowds of over 5000 people, and involved a fireworks show after the game, making the event a big success.
Despite a busy summer, the Alumni are only just getting started. They may have taken a break from playing hockey for the summer months, but hockey season is back and the boys have a fun upcoming schedule. Here is a list of their upcoming games:
October 18th in Port Alberni
October 23rd at the Northshore Canlan Ice Sports
November 14th in New Westminster
November 22nd in Coquitlam
December 6th (Tentative date) in Victoria
February 21st in Smithers
Of course, as important as hockey is, there’s always time for a golf tournament. Upcoming is the annual Jake Milford Tournament that can’t be missed. The date for that tournament this year is September 25th. Not only does this tournament involve each member of the Alumni joining up with a foursome, but it also involves the current Canuck players and management, making it one of the biggest charity events of the year.
