Really Swede ending for ace Edler
Jason Botchford reports that Alex Edler has landed him a spot on the world stage and has been named to Team Sweden for the 2008 IIHF World Championship to be held in Halifax.

“Edler, who recently turned 22, has been added to Sweden's lineup for the 2008 IIHF World Championship, an intriguing tournament which is expected to include Alex Ovechkin, and Rick Nash, Martin St. Louis and Washington Capitals' Calder Trophy finalist Nicklas Backstrom. Edler could play a prominent role on a Team Sweden blueline that includes Kenny Jonsson, Magnus Johansson and Niclas Wallin.”

“Edler played in the YoungStars game at All-Star Weekend and has a chance to be named to the NHL's all-rookie team. With 20 points, he reached a plus-18 rating this season before finishing out the team's trying year at plus-6.”

“He proved to be an effective member of the Canucks power play unit. He scored four goals with the man advantage. But maybe most impressive was Edler's durability. There had been questions about how he would hold up playing a full season in the NHL. He provided the answer by leading all Vancouver defencemen in games played (75) and finishing third on the team in minutes played (1,600:15).”

“In February, Edler was one of the Canucks' most-coveted assets when former GM Dave Nonis was trying to make a trade to acquire more scoring.”
