Print| The curtain has closed for the 2007-08 Vancouver Canucks. A season that began with such optimism ended with the team missing the playoffs for the second time in three years. As disappointing as the end result was, there were some great memories hatched along the way. Here’s a look at the top 20-11 Canucks moments from the past season. 20) November 27, 2007 vs. Anaheim Todd Bertuzzi returns to Vancouver. Bert’s first visit to Vancity – since being traded to Florida with Alex Auld and Bryan Allen for Luongo and Lukas Krajicek – was largely uneventful, at least from a Bertuzzi perspective. Bert received a nice hand from the crowd as he first hit the ice but he logged just 12:43 and was a -2 as the Canucks skated to a 4-0 victory.  Bertuzzi calls a press conference19) January 27, 2008 @ Atlanta All-star salute. Roberto Luongo is voted into the NHL all-star game as the Western Conference’s starting goaltender and Henrik Sedin is named as a reserve. Luongo declines the invite to spend time with his pregnant wife. Henrik makes the trip to Atlanta and registers two assists as the East downs the West 8-7. Star-studden Sedin an All-Star18) February 19, 2008 @ Minnesota Daniel to the rescue! On February 19, with the Canucks trailing Minnesota 2-1 late in the third period and in danger of falling eight points behind the division-leading Wild, Daniel Sedin took over. First, he set up Markus Naslund on the powerplay to tie things up. Then, in overtime, he took a drop pass from brother Henrik and beat Nik Backstrom to give Vancouver the much-needed two points. Danny's the man in Minny17) March 8, 2008 vs. St. Louis Izzy leaves the Blues dizzy. It was a game that appeared destined for overtime. With just over four minutes remaining in the third period and the score tied at two, Ryan Kesler, Alex Burrows and Brad Isbister were cycling the puck in the St. Louis end. Suddenly, Burrows (more on him in a little bit) darted toward the net and Kesler (him too) hit “Burr” with a quick pass. As every Blue in the vicinity looked to Burrows, #14 calmly slipped a backhand pass to Isbister at the side of the net. All Izzy had to do was finish. He did and the Canucks won their second game in the month of March. Burrows sets up Isbister 16) March 15, 2008 @ Dallas Naslund, Morrison, Pettinger combine for nine points, lead Canucks to important win over Dallas. It was a desperate time for Vancouver, to be sure. Heading into Big D in mid-March, the Canucks had lost four of five road games and had netted just five goals over that span. Seemingly out of nowhere, the members of this new-look line exploded for a goal and two assists each, including the winner by Brendan Morrison early in the third period. This win was the first of three consecutive. Markus-Mo-Matt line are magic15) December 10, 2007 @ Los Angeles Ironman no more. While the end of Brendan Morrison’s consecutive games played streak certainly wasn’t a cause for joy, his feat is one that should be celebrated by Canuck fans. Morrison appeared in 542 consecutive games, 534 of which came with Vancouver. That is a club record. Morrison’s streak came to an end when he opted for wrist surgery in December. He missed three months before returning March 10 against Los Angeles. B-Mo no longer gives it a go14) February 21, 2008 @ Nashville Emergence: Mason Raymond. In his first stint with Vancouver this season, Mason Raymond looked out of place. The 22-year old had just one assist in nine games before he was sent to the farm. But Raymond returned in December as a new man, totaling 9 goals and 11 assists in 40 games before a knee injury shelved him for the season. Raymond’s best contest was against Nashville on February 21, when he scored not only one beautiful goal, but also added an assist and the shootout winner. Mason’s blinding speed brought a dimension to the Vancouver attack that was otherwise lacking. Everybody Loves Raymond 13) February 10, 2008 vs. Chicago Shannonian Spin-o-rama After Markus Naslund scored a dramatic goal against Chicago with just over a minute remaining in the third period and forced overtime, Ryan Shannon ensured he would be the one making the highlight reel. Shannon stepped up in the shootout and orchestrated a beautiful spin-o-rama move on Blackhawks goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin to give Vancouver the eventual shootout victory. The goal was not without controversy. Shannon appeared to bump Khabibulin on the play and, for his trouble, he received a punch to the back of the head. Shannon's spinning surprise12) March 10, 2008 @ Los Angeles Kesler comes through in the crunch. The Vancouver Canucks had been unable to beat the Kings all year and now, with their season on the line, they couldn’t get a puck past their own struggling former goaltender Dan Cloutier. Suddenly, after some hard work from Alex Burrows, Ryan Kesler picked up a rebound and scored. The game was headed to overtime but Kesler was by no means through. He deflected a Willie Mitchell point shot past Cloutier to give Vancouver its most dramatic win of the season. Kesler is king in L.A.11) October 13, 2007 vs. Edmonton “The Shift”: Sedin Version Consider it 110 seconds of the best hockey you’ll ever see. From the time Krajicek dumped the puck in with 8:50 remaining in the second period to when Daniel Sedin scored with 7:00 left, the Edmonton Oilers didn’t clear their own zone. Instead, Vancouver fired the puck around as though it was conducting a precision passing drill. After Ohlund rang a wrister off the post, Daniel finally snapped one blocker-side past a gasping Roloson. The Oilers who were trapped in their own end for nearly two minutes might well have welcomed the goal. Sedin's stupendous shift |
