Campbell, Richards, Huet all find new homes on NHL deadline day

Brad Richards, Brian Campbell and Cristobal Huet all found themselves on the move Tuesday after a flurry of moves ahead of the NHL's trade deadline.

The Dallas Stars emerged as a Stanley Cup contender by acquiring Richards from the Tampa Bay Lightning for goaltender Mike Smith and forwards Jussi Jokinen and Jeff Halpern. The Stars also received goalie Johan Holmqvist and a fourth-round pick.

Richards, the playoff MVP when Tampa won the Stanley Cup in 2004, had to waive a no-trade clause in his contract to complete the deal. He'll earn US$7.8 million each of the next three seasons.

The San Jose Sharks should also be in the mix out West after getting Campbell from the Buffalo Sabres for young winger Steve Bernier and a first-round draft pick.

Campbell had spent his entire career in Buffalo but was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Not wanting to lose him for nothing, Sabres GM Darcy Regier decided to trade one of his top players after being unable to sign Campbell to a long-term extension.

The biggest news in the Eastern Conference came out of Montreal, where the Habs anointed Carey Price their No. 1 goalie by dealing Huet to the Washington Capitals for a second-round draft pick.

Huet and Price had split starts in goal this season.

Price, 20, is 12-9-3 heading into Tuesday's game against Atlanta. He led AHL Hamilton to the Calder Cup last spring.

Montreal is among the top teams in the East but will have a young goaltending tandem heading into the post-season. The team recalled 22-year-old Jaroslav Halak from the AHL to serve as Price's backup.

In other moves:

-The Ottawa Senators acquired two-time Stanley Cup winner Martin Lapointe from Chicago for a sixth-round draft pick.

-The Toronto Maple Leafs dealt enforcer Wade Belak to the Florida Panthers for a fifth-round draft pick in 2008.

-The Carolina Hurricanes acquired forward Tuomo Ruutu from the Blackhawks for forward Andrew Ladd in an exchange of former first-round draft picks.

-The Colorado Avalanche acquired defenceman Ruslan Salei from the Florida Panthers for defenceman Karlis Skrastins and a third-round draft pick.

-Forward Mike Comrie signed a $4-million, one-year contract extension with the New York Islanders, avoiding potentially being dealt as an upcoming unrestricted free agent.

-The New Jersey Devils acquired veteran defenceman Bryce Salvador from the St. Louis Blues for tough guy Cam Janssen.
