January 29th 2008 marked a monumental moment in Vancouver Canucks history as they reached 200 consecutive sell-outs at General Motors Place. The evening was marked by a ceremonial puck drop by one of the longest serving season ticket holders, Ernie Dougherty who has held season’s tickets since 1952.
Not only is Ernie a long time season ticket holder, but he also began his professional hockey career in Vancouver with the Western League Canucks in their inaugural season in 1945-46. Ernie went on to a successful hockey career with both the Western and Eastern League and completed his career playing for Nottingham of the British League.
Upon retirement from hockey, Ernie got into the ice cream business, and still runs a successful concession at the PNE. Ernie keeps himself very busy with his role with thin the BC Hockey Benevolent Association. He has been a member since its inception in 1952 and today serves as the treasurer, and sits on the Board of Directors. Ernie is also a charter member of the Jake Milford Golf Tournament Committee and in 1996 he received the Jake Milford Plaque for outstanding and lasting contributions to hockey in BC.
