At the 2nd annual Canucks Family Education Centre (CFEC) Christmas Dinner, over 200 moms and dads with their little boys and girls of all ages filled their bellies with a festive holiday meal. Held at General Motors Place, the dinner was hosted by Canucks player spouses, the Vancouver Canucks Community Partnerships Dept, and Aramark Sports & Entertainment. In celebration of their dedication to family learning and literacy, families from CFEC were treated to a traditional Christmas meal, complete with turkey and all the trimmings, roast beef, pastas, and tasty desserts.

Lotta Naslund, Andrea Kesler, Erin Morrison, Tamara Isbister, Leigh Ann Handrahan (Jeff Cowan), Judy Bowness, Denise Tambellini, and Deanna and Clara Aquilini were on hand to help make the evening possible. New mom Katie Bieksa even left 5 week-old Cole home with dad, Kevin, to join the other spouses in hosting the dinner. In many cases, this meal will be the only traditional Christmas dinner these CFEC families will receive over the holiday season.

The children enjoyed complimentary festive face painting and a Santa Fin photo booth. In addition, all of the children were given a small Christmas present on their way home, courtesy of the Canucks. Without Aramark’s donation of staff and most importantly, the amazing food, this event wouldn’t have been possible Thank you!

The mandate of the Canucks Family Education Centre is to positively impact low literacy levels on Vancouver’s east side by providing a co-coordinated and comprehensive approach to family literacy and lifelong learning. It targets families living in one of Canada’s poorest postal codes. Both young students and their parents are involved, making it a truly unique and rewarding learning experience for the entire family. Nearly 1,000 participants, ages 3 – 80 years old, attend a variety of CFEC family literacy programming each year.
