Coaching Day in BC
The Vancouver Canucks, BC Hockey, Hockey Canada and Tim Hortons held their annual at Bill Copeland arena, on Saturday January 7th, 2005. Minor hockey coaches province-wide had the rare opportunity to watch the Vancouver Canucks go through their paces with Vancouver Canucks head coach Marc Crawford and his coaching staff during a game-day skate.
"It was really exciting to see so many coaches at the arena on such a miserable, rainy day", said Barry Smith, Associate coach of the Vancouver Canucks.
"The drills we ran today are drills any coach of any level can use at their local rinks," Johnston said.
But Coaching Day didn't end there. Local minor hockey teams from the Burnaby Winter Club and Burnaby Minor Hockey Association did an excellent job demonstrating the drills for the visiting coaches, while being instructed by BC Hockey course conductors Grant Armstrong and Marc Robitaille. Both course conductors, who were also wired for sound, gave key teaching points to every drill.
The first group to take the ice was the hockey 2 and 3 tim-bits group from the Burnaby Winter Club followed by an Atom A team from Burnaby Minor Hockey Association that demonstrated Hockey Canada's skills testing program. The day was wrapped up with a demonstration from Burnaby Minor Hockey Association Midget C club who also did an excellent job on the ice.
This years' event also had a unique addition never seen before during : the event ran in conjunction with CBC's Hockey Day in Canada. This meant that the winners of the Pee Wee Hockey Day in Canada poster contest, Peninsula Pee wee C Major Eagles, attended the morning skate, followed by a tour of GM Place, an entertaining evening at the Canucks/Flames game, and a team meal with Vancouver Canucks after their 4 - 3 victory over the Flames.
