09/05/05

Rookie camp is now underway for the Vancouver Canucks. 24 players are in attendance out at 8-Rinks including both Canucks draft picks Luc Bourdon(10th overall in 2005) and Julien Ellis-Plante(189th overall in 2004) who played in the Team Canada World Junior camp in Vancouver last month. Mostly it was a feeling out session with the tempo and intensity picking up later in the week as players battle for the coaching staff before the prospects show up on Thursday night.

Some of the veterans were also at General Motors Place to workout with Roger Takahashi and get prepared for the main camp which goes in Whistler next week. Take note of the vintage 'Grizzlies' shirt Auld is sporting!
Once out at 8-Rinks things got to the ice which all the players were looking forward to. The coaching staff worked them fairly hard, then upstairs for some off-ice conditioning and then a quick video session before heading back to the hotel. The practice was supposed to be closed to the public, but due to the overwhelming response, the Canucks opened it up for the fans at the last minute.
Ian Clarke was on hand to work with the netminders, while Jack McIlhargey ran the practice and shouted encouragement to the youngsters, especially Bourdon as he was throwing his weight around on the ice. You have to see this kid skate, he really can fly!
