Vancouver, BC – The Vancouver Canucks are proud to announce that players, alumni, coaching staff and management will be participating in the 12th Annual Canwest Raise-a-Reader day on Wednesday, September 24th in support of literacy. In addition to the Vancouver Canucks, hundreds of volunteers, including local celebrities, Vancouver Police, Vancouver Firefighters, and Vancouver Sun journalists will be stationed on streets throughout Vancouver exchanging a special Raise-a-Reader edition of the Vancouver Sun for donations.

Last year alone, Raise-a-Reader raised over one million dollars for family literacy programs in British Columbia. Major beneficiaries include the Canucks Family Education Centre, the Vancouver Public Library Foundation, Literacy BC, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and many more. In total, more than 100 family literacy organizations throughout BC benefit from Raise-a-Reader each year.

Raise-a-Reader started in Vancouver in 1997 and has since raised over $4.2 million dollars in support of children and family literacy in British Columbia alone. The Raise-a-Reader program went national in 2002, with twenty eight other Canadian cities hosting Raise-a-Reader Day this year. The Vancouver Raise-a-Reader campaign continuously leads the rest of the country in annual fundraising.
