Members of the Vancouver Canucks swapped their hockey sticks for playing cards on February 12th at the ninth annual Dice and Ice Benefit, presented by HSBC. This signature event transformed the Hyatt Regency Grand Ballroom and foyer into a James Bond style casino, and gave guests the opportunity to go head to head with Canucks players and coaches at blackjack, roulette, and poker. While some of the 700 guests tried to “beat the keeper” at texas hold’em, others had the chance to bid on some of the many unique silent auction items up for sale. The event raised over 250,000 dollars to benefit the Canucks for Kids Fund in support of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation. John Shorthouse arrived in style to kick off the second half of the festivities, making a grand entrance in an Aston Martin before acting as the evening’s MC. He eventually relinquished his mic to an auctioneer from Maynard’s, who led the post-dinner live auction, which included a California road trip with the team and one of Roberto Luongo’s masks. Markus Naslund wrapped up the evening by playing host to a dance-off among rookies Mason Raymond, Nathan McIver, Luc Bourdon and Alex Edler. The competition, complete with professional ballroom dancers and “celebrity judges” Ryan Kesler, Kevin Bieksa and Alex Burrows, highlighted some of the rookies’ hidden talents and, while most of them proved to be light on their feet, Bourdon emerged as the eventual winner. Throughout the evening, families and children from Canuck Place were honoured via slide shows and videos, reminding guests of how important their support is to the community. All of the contributions from the evening’s guests ensured that, regardless of who folded, everyone emerged a winner. |
