Derek was 4 years old when he began playing hockey with his father, Jeff, coaching him.  Just like his dad, Derek played in the OHL for Ottawa 67's while working as a golf caddy in the offseason. In 2005-06 he was invited to represent the OHL in the Subway Super Series. Participated in the 2009 AHL All-Star Game, winning the hardest shot competition (98.6 MPH).
