Comets fire off.
The Utica Comets finally kicked off their inaugural American Hockey League season this past weekend, which means we kick-off our weekly Comets Rewind feature!
Friday, October 11th: Rochester Americans 4 Utica Comets 1
-Starting the season a week after most teams got going appeared to hurt the Comets in their opener on Friday night as sloppy defensive zone play hurt the team in the loss.
-Pascal Pelletier scored the first goal in Comets franchise history, while Peter Andersson became the first Canucks prospect to pick up a point, earning assist on the goal.
-Alexandre Grenier was the lone Comets player to finish with a positive plus/minus, finishing plus-1 on the night.
-Darren Archibald earned a TKO victory in a third period scrap with the Americans’ Colin Jacobs.
-Archibald also led the way in the shot department for the Comets with five, including two glorious chances in the second period that were turned aside by Americans netminder Matt Hackett.
-Joe Cannata allowed four goals on 22 shots between the barber poles for the Comets.
Saturday, October 12th: Albany Devils 3 Utica Comets 2
-Lain was tossed from the game for his fight, which came after the Biega scrap was already in progress.
-Grenier picked up the Gordie Howe hat trick after netting his first goal of the season, banging home a rebound off of a Yann Sauve point shot and then picking up an assist with eight seconds remaining in the game.
-Benn Ferriero tallied the other goal for the Comets.
-Grenier, Mullen and Sauve led the way in the shot department for the Comets with four apiece.
-Joacim Eriksson made 26 saves in the Comets crease.
-The teams combined for 66 penalty-minutes, all of which came in the opening frame as the refs put away the whistles for the final 40 minutes, literally.
Comet of the Week
Alex Grenier takes the honors of being named the first Comet of the Week this season after posting two points (1-1-2), seven penalty-minutes and a plus-3 rating in the two games this weekend.
The 6-foot-4 forward used his size to get open in front of the net and bury his first of the season on Saturday night against the Devils, while also using his large frame in the physical department, engaging in a fight with the Devils’ Darcy Zajac after Zajac laid out Comets forward Pascal Pelletier.
Just one game on tap this week for the Utica Comets, a rematch in Rochester against the Americans on Saturday night.
The Comets return home the following Wednesday, October 23rd, for their home opener against the Albany Devils.
