Sacha Guimond scored the game-winner with less than 10 minutes remaining in the third period as the Vancouver Canucks rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Edmonton Oilers by a score of 5-2 at the 2013 Young Stars Classic on Sunday afternoon in Penticton, BC.
Philippe Maillet, Cole Cassels, Alex Friesen and Wes Myron also scored for the Canucks in what was a very physical game that saw three fights.
After a scoreless opening period the Oilers scored twice in the first 3:33 of the second period to take a two-goal lead. Not too long the Canucks found themselves in a hole, Canucks forward Kyle Hope earned the decisive win in a fight over the Oilers Gregory Chase. The fight seemed to spark the Canucks as Maillet finished off a nice give-and-go with Brendan Gaunce to get within one followed by Cassels banging in a rebound to knot things up after 40 minutes.
The Oilers ran out of gas in the third period as they only mustered two shots on Canucks goaltender Mathieu Corbeil. The Canucks scored three times in the final 10 minutes, including an empty-netter, and outshot the Oilers by a count of 44 to 23, including 18-2 in the third period.
The Canucks close out the tournament with a game against the Winnipeg Jets at 11:30 a.m. on Monday.
