If that was an early April Fool's joke, it wasn't funny.
Cory Schneider allowed goals on his first two shots faced and Roberto Luongo was beat twice on his first three shots against as the Edmonton Oilers road an early lead to a 4-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks Saturday night at Rexall Place.
The Oilers led 3-0 a mere 2:43 into the first period (a franchise record for fastest three goals to start a game in franchise history) and the Canucks never recovered losing for the first time in seven outings to open a two-game road trip.
Taylor Hall had three goals and Ladislav Smid rounded out the scoring for the Oilers, who are suddenly back in the Western Conference playoff hunt.
The Canucks were outshot 24-23 and were it not for Luongo, the Oilers may have set a record for goals in a game; Luongo finished with 20 saves, including 10 in the third period.
Vancouver is in San Jose Monday to face the Sharks.
