You had your say and the debate has been settled – for now.
Near the end of January we launched Project NU2, the Vancouver Canucks hunt for new player entrance song options. We gave you, our loyal fans, the chance to voice your opinion about what song the team should have as their intro; 2,853 submissions later and we had our work cutout for us.
After carefully listening to every song and tallying the votes, six songs remained – your sexy six, if you will. They were as follows:
-A Warrior’s Call by Volbeat
-Welcome to the Jungle by Guns N’ Roses
-Burn It To The Ground by Nickelback
-We Are by Static in the Stars
-The House That Heaven Built by Japandroids
-Stockholm by DJ MEG
Just under 18,000 fan votes later and the Canucks were ushered onto the ice Tuesday night by Japandroids’ The House That Heaven Built.
Although the Japandroids hit, their first single off their second album Celebration Rock (released May, 2012), had over half the winning votes and was ultimately chosen to be played at Rogers Arena for a pair of home games, and possibly more, this was hardly a one-horse race.
Two weeks ago we checked in on the voting and Welcome to the Jungle was running away with the contest, with Burn It To The Ground placing second. Next thing you know legendary music magazine SPIN runs an online piece rallying music lovers to back the Japandroids, a British Columbian drum-and-strum duo, which was named SPIN’s Band of the Year in 2012.
What a difference the article made.
Basically overnight Japandroids took the lead and never looked back winning in a landslide vote.
Not ready to fade away into the shadows, Guns N’ Roses tweeted the following, a day later: We know where we want the @VanCanucks to be #InTheJungle. It was too little, too late for one of the greatest bands of all-time – Canucks fans had already spoken.
The Canucks are in the midst of a three-day break from action with their next game going down Saturday night against the Los Angeles Kings at Rogers Arena. When they step onto the ice that night, The House That Heaven Built will be played as it deserves to be.
A BC band ushering BC’s team into battle – it doesn’t get much more West Coast than that.
What happens now?
Good question. Well, for starters, the Japandroids’ tune will be added to a rotating list of songs that will be played throughout the season. U2’s Where the Streets Have No Name will also be heard again, as will some new tunes, all in the hopes of discovering the ultimate song to get the Canucks going at the ultimate moment.
As always, we’d love to hear from you if you have a suggestion about what music should be used as the Canucks intro song.
